silkies due today!!!!

There would be blood if she ate them. Chickens just cant swallow a chick. Someone had to steal them.

i live in uk so there are less predators. the only way in that i hadn't considered before , is under the shed it might be possible but it was during the day. it would have had to explore the dog crate which had netting round it 8-10 ins high and somehow squeeze through those bars. i'm worried about the other chicks out there in a similar set up with another broody, but they've been there a few days and not been taken.

i wish i knew because not knowing has me stressing about the others. there was no blood. i did do a search on here and one member reported seeing a chicken with the chicks feet sticking out of her mouth in the process of eating it.

I live in the uk too, so I know what you mean, the only thing sneaky enough is a fox but could they get in there ?

not a fox
it is totally enclosed roof as well with no damage done to the structure. i the wire is 1/2 inch so only mice could get in really. i still can't believe it.

the shed is on a base of wooden slats i can't see a way through under the shed at all as it is a rectangular frame completely flush with the shed floor. just clutching at straws really wondering if there was a way in but i can't see it.

there is no way a chick could have got out of the wire cage within the coop. at 1 day old they wouldn't have tried either.

i think it will remain a mystery. i still feel very upset over the whole thing.doesn't help that i have a very sick pullet and fear for the lot of them no in case it's infectious.

i have ordered some more eggs since i'm running the incubator anyway with duck eggs. since they will be shipped i realize it might not be successful. i've done rather a lot of driving in the last month either to fetch eggs or chickens and i know nowhere really close that has silkie chicks.

i'll get over it. i think the not knowing makes it harder. not had much luck lately. i got x13 5 week old chicks at auction and only 8 survived. they didn't even die of the same thing. usually all goes well so i've been a bit despondent this year.
