Are they really big? If so, I don't think they are roaches, I have always called them water bugs. I like to turn the lights on at night and watch the chickens go crazy trying to catch them. If they are roaches, I'm blowing up my property

I know what your talking about. We had them show up this year around the coop and pens. The wood we used in a few things was stored and had gotten wet. We let it dry out and used what wasn't soft and rotten. Then when it got hot it's like they came out of the wood. There are different sizes and colors of the ones we have here. They don't look like the "German Roaches that get into peoples houses. they're bigger and can fly a short distance. Our chickens go after them too.

You need liberal amounts (piles in corners) of DE. Forgive the spelling but here goes: Diatomaceous Earth. DE is not a poison. It will dehydrate those nasty bugs. Have you tried any sort of trap? Perhaps something like a large bucket that they crawl into and can't leave. Then you "feed" your chickens in the morning.

I like your idea! I think I'll try a metal bucket with a little vegetable oil on the inside rim so they can't climb out. A piece of banana in the bottom ought to bring them in nicely! Thanks!!!!

oh! how strange, I have notice these ugly boogers in my runs hiding under the waterers. I have also found them in the feed on occasion. My biggest concern is I am terrified they will find their way to the house as my coops are directly in my back yard. I have had chickens for two years and never seen one roach. My back yard is all cedar and to my understanding roaches hate cedar. I haven't seen them in the coops so far, but I REALLY don't want them near the house, I have heard they are near impossible to get rid of!

Trust me, they are impossible to get rid of in the house. My coops sit on my deck, right up next to the house. Guess where the roaches vacation? I have cockatoos indoors and can't use any aerosol insecticides to rid the nasty little varmits from my house. It has been a fight to the death for almost a year now. I hear there's a gel bait the pest control companies use now that makes the roaches attack and eat each other. (They probably named it 'Congress' or something. HAHAHAHAHAHa!) That is my next attempt to win this war. My best exterminator so far has been my vacuum cleaner from midnight to 3 am. I'll let you make your own mental pictures.

By the way, the BIG palmetto bugs won't get in bed with you if you just leave their saddles on and tie their bridles securely to a towel bar. At least that's worked for me.

Jen your seeing water bugs, not roaches. They will come in the house and get under the covers with you though

Just kiddin

WHy do you say they are not roaches? I DEFINITELY see cockroaches at night when I go out to the coop, or during the day if I lift things such as the blocks I use to raise waterers and feeders.

There are many kinds and sizes of cockroaches. The German ones are fairly small, Palmetto bugs are huge and there are others that are in between.
