Silkies Of A Different Color

Doesn't andalusians have its own dilution power?

I have read everything I can find on the silkie "porcelain". I get it. I understand how the "porcelain" got brought into silkies. She has a porcelain colored bird from andalusian buff parents. Its not just anything goes. If "porcelain" (buff lavenders) would breed true it would be accepted, right? The recipe you speak of, self blue buffs, are what one guy said it is and invented a name for it...that is his recipe...not the only way this color can be achieved.

Blue is a diluter of black only. It has no effect on red, and therefore does not dilute buff. Using Caitlin_VT's bird as an example, you could selectively breed for a lighter blue so it looks close to lavender but the buff on the chest and wing will remain unchanged.

Lavender is a diluter of both black and red. It turns buff into a straw color, which is something blue will not do. Here is an example of the difference (picture from Sonoran Silkies). Buffs in the back, isabel and white in the front.

Lavender also changes mille fleur to porcelain. Blue would only dilute the black and the remainder of the bird would be the same.

Blue can affect the black gene, yes. Well the buffs have black in their backgrounds so maybe it will remove smutt from the buff. So IF the buff is a light buff. with no smut, ..the andalusian is so light its almost white...walla. a lovely Isabel ...eventually...not every time but yes...its happing and ill let you know how it goes. ;)

Thanks for all of the nice comments! I have had a couple other chicks hatch out with her color, but I did not keep them so I have no idea how they are turning out :) But I wouldn't call her splash either, would I? What color cockerel should I breed her to to try to decide what color she actually is genetically? Thanks!

Im not a genetic genius or anything but, I would try and breed her to a black. That way if she is a form of splash she will produce blue offspring.

I don't have a Partridge cock Silkie for my hen and no Porcelain hen Silkie for my roo so I put them together as a project. The eight chicks are pretty and show some interesting self blue and partridge markings too. I no longer have the Porcelain cock so hopefully one of these babies will a keeper.

Since this is a project pen, I don't really know what chick will have the coloring that jumps out at me. I think any chick that looks the most blended in blue and buff will be the ones I keep. These images of a few of my favorites so far in the hatch. Two weeks old now.
