No, i haven't used lime. The sand is great because i use it like kitty litter, just rake it clean once a week. I add a fresh layer of sweet pdz after i clean and that absorbs any ammonia and keeps off the flies.

No probs with their feet in the water, but make sure there's water, so you dont have ice sticking to their skin. If anything, i think a good foot cleaning is good anyways!
Yeah with the rainy times we have here and my run being on a slight hill I'm afraid to try sand. The wood chips have been doing much better than the wood shavings and especially since I got the trench dug alongside the run on upper side to slow down the rain runoff.
Wood chips and chicken 💩 make for amazing composting!!!
I will definitely try the ice water foot bath and see how they like it!
I'm sure d'uccles will be all over it...they are totally carazy lil babies!!!

Hey you heat wave folks with high humidity... @AngBantamLuv and @kurby22 do yall do any kind of wading pools or anything for the silkies and satins to get in to cool their feet down?
From what I understand the bottoms of their feet help regulate body temp.
Poor Bluey is the worst affected with her being darker than others. But even the d'uccles are panting now it's so bad here.
I have been sitting them on ice cubes for few seconds at a time to try and bring their temps down...as well as all the other usual stuff like hosing down run, ice in waterers, frozen fruits and electrolytes in separate water and large fan in coop. But there's no end on sight and I don't wanna lose any!
Just thought I'd see if yall had ever tried that with the feathered feet babies we all have!
I have tried a pool, but they wouldn't use it! My best and most successful methods have been using those big ice packs for coolers. I freeze them and they lay on them or stand on them--I also added misters and my Polish will actually stand under them until they get pretty wet. The more constant misting helps because it soaks into the ground more and walk in the puddles and such. I got the ice packs at the Dollar Store and other cheapo stores. The larger packs are better due to their surface area. Poor Bluey!

So no problems with the feathered feet babies in ice water...if they stand in it?
I hadn't had problems with hosing down the run cuz mine is wood chips...so it hasn't been bad at all and I only do the opposite sun areas since they rotate between there depending on location of sun.
I also use first Saturday lime in and around run n coop which helps with smell and flies. You ever tried it?
I use FSL too and it works well for me too! I use it to keep down the flies and dry out the surface, but we also dumped a huge bunch on an ant hill too...cleared them right up. :)

Does anyone know what color my silkie is? 20220529_182240.jpg
