So... my dog had seizures last night which had me awake at midnight helping her.. once it stopped, i turned off the fan (white noise) so i could hear if she had another.

About 15 minutes later i heard a metal bang from outside, and i thought i heard a chicken cluck. But i have extremely good hearing, so it could be something a mile away (not a super power, super annoying). But i was already up, so i figured id check.

So i go outside and Betty, my polkie, is on the ground asleep near the run door, and Bambina, the tiny silkie is at the coop door asleep. They both normally sleep together in the coop door. So i open the door to pick her up, and suddenly i see a white face in the corner!!! Somehow, a very small/baby maybe? POSSUM was in the corner!

I got the dogs back inside and put my chicken shoes on (was in sandals, didn't want to get bit or scratched) while carrying Betty, and when i got back a few seconds later, the possum had escaped!! I put Betty in the coop and locked it, and even did a double check to make sure there wasn't any unwelcome visitors hiding in the run or coop.

So that was a close call!! It must have tried to either squeeze past Betty and Bambina, or disturbed Betty enough for her to flap around, but im so glad i heard that noise, or at least those two could have been killed. Ugh!!

I'll double check the run and coop today to figure out how it got in and secure it. It was really small, like the size of a rat (but it wasn't a rat, definite white face of a possum), so it could have found a small entry. Close call!!

Anyone who tries to say opossums won't kill chickens doesn't know what they are talking about. I lost several to one over a few nights until the dogs got it. I caught it in the act.

The resident racoon hasn't actually caused any problems over the years as it stays away from any structures. Rather odd for one, but we all live happily that way.

I wasn't sure if i should be worried, until i googled! Of course my two smallest chickens were in the front, and the only ones that don't sleep on a roost! Im just so glad i didn't ignore the noise.

I have I'm Blue Too in the house atm under confinement.. She was struggling to walk this morning and wanted snuggles. She's alert and sitting upright in the nursing pen and perked up when she heard the chicks in the back room griping when I cleaned the brooder. My friend and her mom was over when I was in the back room and noticed her change in attitude at the sound of cheeps. Can she be going broody already? She's just 26 weeks and had tossed all but 4 eggs from the bucket but wasn't in sitting. I was worried about Mereks as I had 1 healthy pullet die the day before of unknown causes in a totally separate pen. IBT's mate is up and doing his 'Lil Running Bear' routine around their pen. I'm wondering if she didn't fall off the roost and get knocked senseless.. No impacted crop, no sour crop, nothing on the feet but feathers.

Mareks has one leg out usually. She looks like she's laying down normally other than wings ready for balance.

I'm not sure if your bird is sick or injured. Electrolytes in the water don't hurt.
She's still inside where I can keep an eye on her.. Still not eating or drinking much that I can tell, but she does get up to stretch her legs and turn around. May be just a sprain, and the pain has done her appetite in.
