Day 14 for my lil satins from Fielder Farms!
All 13 look amazing!
Had 3 that I pulled last week due to either infertility or eggs too old to develop.
Next week babies!!!

That is amazing they are doing so well! I hope you get a great hatch! I can't wait to see the little ones! 😁

Yeah that little cutie looks like it is probably male to me too. It would surprise me if it turned out female with that much comb development so young. Adorable though! 🥰

OK it’s been six whole day since I posted photos of Hotaru! I think I’ve shown quite a bit of restraint.🤣
23 days old today.
Photos just now, you can really see the red coming in. She has a few black spots at the base of her tail and some on her head, they haven’t changed much yet.😊View attachment 3051974View attachment 3051975View attachment 3051976View attachment 3051977View attachment 3051978

Wow she sure is getting a lot of red in, just gorgeous! 😍

I'm really happy you are sharing as often as you are. Knowing how this color can develop with this type of crossing is really helpful. My red partridge/paint mixed babies are around 6 and a half weeks old now and except for one partially red neck feather on one paint there is no red visible yet. 😂

How could you not love a silkie 🥰

Awww what a pretty little one! 🥰

I love my 2 guys!!!

They are so handsome! ❤️

I THINK she will end up being red in the front and fading out to white towards the back. Is this red what is called autosomal red? I see this term used a lot on the genetics threads, but I am not sure exactly what it means. When I put red and dominant white (paint is not an option that I can see anyway) in the color calculator, the resulting chicks are black or white, the red is not expressed. Mentions only may get some red leakage in males. Obviously more than that going on here. The older sib to Hotaru is getting some red on the chest too, but not as much. The new owner sent me a few photos.
If I were to use her in a Satin breeding program, any idea what color she should be bred back to continue to get these kind of markings, maintaining the red?🤔

Since she is a mix of the cochin and silkie she is perfect for starting satin line right?!
That's what I would like to try cuz I love the thickness cochins have as well as their feathered feet! But luv all other aspects of silkies!
Match made in heaven lol!
There's someone on Instagram that I saw today and it has to have cochin in their satin program cuz they have the most beautiful feathered feet I've ever seen!!!
Is this not stunning!?
N I have no idea if this is allowed to post on byc or not...yall know?

Yes, Cochins are usually used to introduce the smooth feathers. Just takes generations to get the combs and skin coloring right.

Gorgeous bird! 😍

When I use a photo I find online, I just say in the post I found it online. If it is public information (not copyrighted) then it should not be a problem.😊
But I honestly do not know if there are any official rules about it.🤷‍♀️

I'd say a lot of it is probably autosomal red. If she's gold based it could be some is due to that too but I'd be fairly certain a good portion of it is from autosomal red.

Autosomal red is basically red that isn't related to the sex linked gold/silver. Salmon faverolles are a good example of a breed/color that displays autosomal red. They are silver based so the red on the wings of the male and all the wheat/gold/red color on the females is not due to being gold based but instead to autosomal red. Autosomal red is somewhat complex and not well understood.

Paints just don't seem to show up well on the chicken calculator. It seems to be a great tool for a lot of things but colors relating to heterozygous dominant white not as much in my experience.

The way her red is coming in is really similar to what you'd see in a red pyle silkie. The red pyle chicks I've had never had obvious paint spots at hatch like her though. I'll be curious to see if the spots are fairly noticeable as she feathers in more.

The best partner kind of depends on your goal. Do you want to keep the black spots as large as possible for a sort of paint calico look or do you mind more of a red pyle look where the spots are smaller? Either way a partridge might be a good first partner. You would probably get partridge or smutty buff/red, leaky black, leaky paints with red, and red pyle like offspring. Continuing with the ones who hatch looking more paint will hopefully maintain the better spots. Breeding back to red might cause too much of the white to be lost and breeding back to black might cause too much red to be lost. I think the partridge may be a decent balance between the two but I could be really off. If you could repeat the paint x red cross with unrelated birds and get another like Hotaru to breed with and start a line with that would probably be even better. :)

Somehow getting them on a birchen base might be good too. This might allow the neck/head and breast to be more red and the body white with black spots (hopefully). Kind of uncharted territory though so I'm just theorizing. I'm going to have to figure out how to create something similar myself if I want my paint based calico project to go anywhere.

Well lil family came last night to look at the chicks...they came for the little paint but since yall agreed with me it was lookin cockrel they couldn't take him.
They did get the little blue (which wasn't as light as I wanted for breeding program) and the black which I am trying to steer away from.
So that leaves me with the 2 paints!
Gonna keep them both since little girl is a beauty! Hey I think that's what I'll name her!!! Betty White is her new name!
Lil dude - idk what to name him but figured I'd keep him for while to see how it goes since he is gorgeous!
They also asked if they could buy Josie!
I was NOT expecting that! I said I could never sell her for $5 like the chicks...the dad said money is no object we want her!
I explained that she doesn't have cross beak but she definitely has a beak issue going on cuz it has always "clicked" when she eats. So I had already decided I can't breed her cuz that would get passed down.
But she's my little cutie! Money isn't everything!
So that leaves me with two 5 week olds...gonna try to integrate them more quickly with my 5 month olds since I've always taken them off heat the past week.
Do yall ever check up on past chicks to see how they are once sold?
I tend to do that probably too much?! But I get so attached to em...then they go and I'm like - constantly rethinking myself, wondering how they are, etc.!
I know I can't keep em all! And my goal has always been to share the luv of these lil babies with everyone! Which means you have to let go of em! Easier said than done.

Thank you so much @LynnaePB for your always thorough and enlightening answers to genetics questions! I SO appreciate you!❤️

I always feel like I regret it later when I sell any of my birds. I wish I could keep ALL of them! Most of the folks I sell chicks to send me update photos once in awhile, and let me know how they are doing, which I always appreciate. Always good to see they are doing well and are cared for. The majority of my chicks go to pet homes.😊
No reason not to keep Josie if you love her. I have several chickens that I do not use for breeding and keep them just because they are pets.🥰
