Gotcha! Yah, we once had one of those horrible quality hatchery silkies who was such a brute and pretty big, giant for a silkie.

But he was a great flock leader! The hens all loved him and he was very protective of them.
Here's Mr. Evil.

Chinese silkies range in size.
This is him before spur growth.
The only poor quality silkie to my mind is a silkie that is mean. I love all silkies equally.

So, I am wondering if a rose comb or a single comb is a sure sign that they are mixes. One of the birds in question also has a red-skinned face, but the rest of her skin is blue. So are they mixes?
Usually as long as they have silkied feathers and a crest they are pure. But, not always. Of course red combs, pink skin, 4 toes and ITTY BITTY crests pop up in Hatchery stock.

Not exactly.
Here's a punnet square for walnut combs.

Red skin, & single combs can appear in the most purest of bloodlines.
