Hello, everyone! If everything works out I will be getting 20, 6-10 week old silkie chicks tomorrow! They should all be white but I will see what they guy has. I might get Chip a boyfriend while I'm at it.
For anyone fallowing my adventure with Chip she just gave me her 2nd egg today!

So exciting, good luck with the new additions! I've got a bunch close to that age range as well, they sure are cute at this stage! :D

Congratulations on the eggs from chip as well! That is great you were able to confirm she is a little pullet and is now laying. I guess that is a silkie for you...they sure can take their time to begin laying sometimes.

I stopped getting alerts for this thread!

Anyways, I finally finished that silkie article. It doesn't have a lot of pictures because my silkies currently have wet crests and are not "picture worthy," but I might add more later.
Silkie Myths and Facts

Uhg yeah I hate it when that happens with the notifications!

I loved the article, definitely very informative! I'm sure it'll be really helpful to those new to silkies! :D

So, this time for real one of my Silkies laid her first egg! It was Kana and she is 28 and a half weeks old, so I guess it’s about average age. It is so tiny next to my leg horn cross’s egg. Photo is for comparison the leg horn cross has a fairly normal size chicken egg.🥰

Anyone know what colour chicks I'd end up with if I breed my red pyle cockerel to white or black Silkie hens?
-- I want more chicks but my calico roo is not doing the job anymore I don't know why, but my cockerel in other coop is providing fertile eggs but I don't want to breed with red comb silkies (I just kept them to keep cockerel company)
I love all the different colours rooster gives me, splash to red pyle to black, white. Such a shame he hasn't been fertilising... I have 7 chicks now but not sure who's the father since both boys were in the same coop.
I'm thinking to swap the boys over.

According to the chicken color genetics calculator, in both cases the chicks will be either white or black. But is also depends on what your white hen is hiding. Recessive white often hides partridge, then your hen could act as patridge, color wise. No way to tell until the chicks hatch! My recessive white cockerel turns out he is "hiding" blue and he is genetically acting as blue. Half the fun when mixing color is the surprises! 😊

Thanks for the reply, I was hoping to get more of the red (orange/buff?) colour in the mix, I guess I'll see how they turn out. What age are Silkie chicks when you can start to see if they will have some red colouring? Mine are 4 weeks old now (already! Time flys)

Looks like you may get some gold patterning over the base color (black or white) if your white hen is "hiding" partridge.
I was able to "prove" breed my cockerel by breeding him to black. He produced both blue and black chicks. If he had been "pure" white, then the chicks should all have been black. If he produces splash when crossed to splash (eggs in the incubator now) then I will know for sure he is hiding blue.

Sometimes you just have to see what happens. Not sure about when you would see any red leakage, might be several months.
Your rooster may be hiding several other colors as well. 😊

Do you know how I would breed to get continued red pyle colour in all chick? -if that's possible?
