Hi everybody! The Silkirs now turned 17 weeks old and I am wondering should they have access to crushed eggsells. Crookie has been trying to eat left over shells by the compost bin but I was not sure if it was only her curiousity (she sometimes over feeds erself) or does she really need calcium. Also when should roosters start crowing? The roosters will be 18 weeks old in a few days and still no crow:idunno

Mine are the same age (they might be week older, I can't remember) and have access to oyster shell, (since they are with my big flock) but I don't know if they eat it yet. One of my cockerels has been crowing, usually every couple days for a few weeks now, he is like "auuuuuuuur". Another one of them started crowing yesterday. He sounds like "urruawauock!" like another rooster is attacking him or something.😂

Are the eggs refrigerated? Probably yes. I gave refrigerated silkie eggs to Chickie to sit on while I bought D uccle eggs. They stopped developing at around day 3-4. Anyway good luck!
There are other posters who have successfully hatched eggs that were refrigerated from the stores here on this site, and stories that have hit the news. Always hit or missed if course. Also, u.s. law requires eggs to be washed and refrigerated.. not the case overseas. (Is because our egg factories are so filthy, they don't pack them into hell systems in the rest of the world).

Ooh... if she's eating the calcium, she might be sensing the factory getting into gear!!! How exciting!
