I tried using this.. it is a mixed bag. I got so many males trying this to find a female!! With the tolbunts, it was true for Wilma, but Pebbles and Fred's both looked small.
Yeah, that’s more what I figured…sort of like a bell curve where it works for many but not all. Will be fun to test it out 🙃

I still use it.. i was very confident about Wilma. Id say its more accurate for females.. but if it looks "male", don't rule it out!
Good to know! :) I hope this won’t be like my first ever quail hatch I did. I got 2 hens and 9 roos 😩😩😩 And the one hen was a royal bag to everyone but her boyfriend…so I found her a new home where she could live happy with just her boyfriend. Leaving me with ONE girl. So sad! Here’s hoping this hatch goes better!

Yall had two assists finally hatch on their own at 12:30am...they looked fine and were doing like normal hatches.
I got up at 5am and they are both laying there dead. I know @LadiesAndJane is middle of her night so hadn't heard from her.
What do yall do with the littles that don't make it? This is my first time having any die that hatched 😔.

If they are a failed egg or new hatch, i would wrap them and place them in the trash can. If they've grown into a pet I've loved, I'd bury them.

Responded to you in messages.
I, too have never had this happen before.
Only thing I can think of is if temp was off. Humidity would not really have an affect at this point.
Could be they were just weak from the effort of hatching and just didn’t make it.
These are all just guesses on my part.
Sorry I do not have a better explanation.:hugs

Oh those are some beautiful birds! ❤️

Aww she is such a pretty girl! 🥰

They are all looking so cute! I love what a neat variety of colors you got this time. The older ones from the earlier hatch are just so beautiful too, I can't wait to see how these little ones mature! ❤️

Aww such cuties! Good luck selling from the ones you will be hatching too! It's so much fun doing the bigger hatches and seeing what pops out. 🥰

I'm not much help not having much experience with polish but a while back I got a couple polish chicks from a feed store and used this method to try to pick out a girl. I picked the chick with the biggest fullest vault and then couldn't resist one of the littler chicks who was differently colored than the rest that had a less round more "male" looking vault. The one that had the more female looking vault did indeed turn out female and the one with the more male looking vault did turn out male. I recently got a little polish in a hatchery assortment though and that little cutie did not have a very female looking vault but is female. From my limited experience it seems like it works to some extent but isn't always accurate. Probably a lot better of a hint than trying to guess and having a 50/50 shot though!

Interestingly enough the vault in silkies is sometimes the same way (though in their case it's not so much the shape of the vault but more the presence of the vault). I find in a lot of lines silkie girls tend to be vaulted more often than boys. Definitely not always the case but it's ended up like that in more lines I've hatched from than not.
Thank you. 💗
