Hey everyone! I'm trying to collect some silkie eggs for a hatch but I have one that is slightly cracked. Included is a picture. Should I use this one or only use non-cracked eggs?
If the crack is minor you can use some liquid bandage and paint over it, it should seal it. How does the air cell look in this egg? If the air cell is detached or loose I would not use this egg if you have others to choose from. If it’s looking good then go ahead and incubate it and you’ll see within four days or so if it’s going to develop or not. 😊

It kind of depends. I'm not sure what the red babies out of red lines look like or if it varies a lot. I've had red partridge hatch and they were partridge looking with a nice red tint as chicks. Then I've got the mille split boy and my red frizzle girl. The frizzle was from a red father and a red penciled mother. Both she and the mille split boy were very light yellow/white as chicks but with some black markings (like a few black dots/stripes running down the back). I think the wheaten based reds like that can tend to look really light downed as chicks sometimes.

These are the one I think were eb (partridge based). The male is kind of red partridge + some other genes that spread the red into other places like the chest etc. The female equivalent looks more classic partridge but more red.

And then the little mille split which seems to be wheaten based looked like this as a chick. The little red frizzle girl (who I don't have a picture of handy) looked really similar but with fewer black stripes. The smooth satin girl in the picture also has dominant white involved so pretty much looked like a yellow chick.

Mille split a little older (I think a lot of the time the red comes through more vibrantly in boys which I suspect this one is)

Oh congratulations! What a pretty little one too! 😍

I'm still not sure. I would have said cockerel if the little one wasn't from your flock just for the comb. The crest and tail has me leaning slightly more towards a boy but I'd still wait on this little one just in case. I see the green sheen in my black pullets sometimes too so I wouldn't pay much mind to it.
I'll never grasp all this!
I'm just gonna have to keep havin them babies!!! Lolol

Hey guys, anyone dry hatch silkies? I'm reading online people recommend it for silkies?
I dry incubate. You need to have a good incubator. It depends very much on the ambient humidity in your area. Living in Hawaii, it is high here. When I incubate the humidity runs anywhere from 25-45% in the incubator. You do not want it to go much lower than 25%. The humidity is usually at least 60% in the house.
Best to test run your incubator for a few days and monitor the humidity to see what you get. Make sure to have independent hygrometers as well.
I add water when I see the first internal pip or at DAY 19, whichever comes first. I usually stop turning at DAY 17.
This method works for me in my environment. 😊

Ok, I'm in eastern Oklahoma, humidity in the house is running between 40% and 50% higher if we have storms. Using a brinsea mini.

It still may work for you. You never know until you try. Try running your incubator without water for a couple days and see what kind of readings you get.😊
Brinseas are awesome. I have one, too.

I've received a couple shipped eggs that has slight cracks. I tried sealing them with a bit of wax but both developed a week or two then passed. If the egg is from your own flock and you can choose others I'd go with something without cracks since the risk of the baby starting but just not making it is a lot higher with cracked eggs. I've heard of others having success though so it could be worth a try if the egg is valuable and not easily replaced.

Anyone knows what colour is Luna?

Do you know what color the parents were? I'm guessing this little one is a mixed color.

I've seen some babies that looked slightly similar from a gray crossed with other colors (having some lighter/silver down on the head but a mostly dark body). I'm not sure how these babies turn out. I would guess maybe a little like a gray, or a black that may have silver leakage.

I 100% agree with @LadiesAndJane. Sometimes the humidity here is high enough I can run the incubator dry for the first 18 days or so. Other times the humidity dips too low and I have to add some water to make sure the air cell growth stays on track. I'd say It's more about the average humidity than about running dry or not. Some places with higher ambient humidity running dry is a lifesaver to get the humidity into a better range. I feel I get the best hatches with an average of 30-40% humidity for the first 18 days.

Do you change anything else about your incubation parameters when hatching silkies? I'm incubating my second clutch of them, and found that the first clutch started externally pipping at day 18, so this time I removed the turner at day 16 just to be on the safe side (as opposed to day 17 for the last clutch). Just wondering if there is anything else I should be doing in the future. TIA :)
