Silkies - They’re simply SPECTACULAR!

I wrapped mine in deer netting, but am going to redo that when the crib is empty.. wrap it on the outside instead. Then I used empty feed bags on the inside to water proof the bottom and part way up the sides. Lastly I used garden wire for a top with some bamboo supports.. I keep an old quilt over the top.

It took me 6 months (more if you count last years chicks lol) to think of putting a crib sheet over the top of the brooder to keep them in I absolutely adore the feed bags for brooder flooring (we have a wooden slat box that kept loosing shavings), rain cover for prefab runs, etc. Poor hubby gets an earful when he tries to throw them away

I got crappy ones from Ideal. I only kept 3 hens and upon close inspection the one is missing toes, and the lavender had huge pigment holes on her feet. All 3 aren't the best looking birds or a good representation of the breed.

My others are the offspring from breeders who show. Shipped eggs are awful but i did get a pair of really nice birds.

I would never order from Ideal again . I ordered Silkies ,Sultans Frizzled Cochins And Turkens none represented the breeds and they either had agressive tendices or died from genetic problems. I bought my others from TSC and a locale breeder and have been so much happier with my Silkies

Luckily I have found a way to sleep right through the crowing with so many roosters around her, including an OEGB in the house. He's quite the character.
On another note, these are two of my silkie crosses from a bantam BO and General Lee. He's also the silkie that is giving the black cap on some of his offspring. Is this what you would call partridge pattern on a smooth feathered chicken? If that is the case, then it confirms my suspicion that Gen Lee has partridge in his background.View attachment 3152275View attachment 3152276

Isabella (and friends) is going off to his own flock of ladies tomorrow, I’ll miss that little turdmuffin lol. My kids are going to be so sad We'll still have an overabundance of boys… Slowly par it down as gently as I can

Moved the chicks and Molly to the silkie pens from the broody coop. There was resistance on leaving the coop. Had to deploy the puppy in there for them to run out. Puppy grew up with chickens and ignores them.

Caused myself a new problem because silkies are master of hide and seek. Half the chicks ran into the tall grass and laid down so I couldnt find them. Took me a hour to find the last one.

So hard to tell Bluey, Jaffa and Chip apart! Slight difference of darker bit on wings and Bluey is slightly lighter, patridge buff? What colour would you call them?.. I love Smokey and Biscuit colour babies! So much variety of colours... Here's pics of Chip...I think.. all still looking girly at this stage which is amazing since all orange looking ones have been boys in the past. Would all these coloured ones produce orange patridge sort of coloured offspring?

I try to keep my numbers under 20.
2 coops/runs:
Smaller one with 4 large fowl.
Larger one with 14 bantams and smaller birds, including 8 Silkies and 3 Silkie crosses.
Upcoming chicks do not count according to chicken math. Also I understand any bird with a name does not count either towards the total, so technically I have 0 birds.

under 20 is my goal. just have not figured out how to succeed
