Yes, she was bred back to a partridge silkie. Molly's grandson will be used for breeding next year as he looks full silkie. Just more orangey than I prefer.
Between the comb and bits of red in feathers I'd say boy.
He's a very good color for photos. Teach him how to pose
Check out the silver partridge silkie roo in the center of the photo... someone from GA posted it in ALABAMA chickens group for sale.. too danged bad they are so far away! I would be on that roo like a duck on a junebug!

Do any if yall use construction sand in your runs with your silkies?
I've got silkies, satins, d'uccles and cochins and the d'uccles feathers on their feet stay broken off all the time as well as my oldest roo which is a Satin.
I was wondering how it does in rains...it's a covered run but on a slope so the big rains run off the hill into there and it's a mess from the where we got rains before the blizzard then the blizzard hit and now we are getting more rains!
I've used stall dry and pdz as well as extra pine shavings til idk what else to do.

About 10 weeks old.
Someone will take him tomorrow for a pet with her other 3 silkie boys on a 20 acre property. She doesn't have hens so the boys get along fine. All are just pets that love snuggles
I use kids play sand and dirt mixed together so there is good drainage, I think the play sand is a bit too fine it does get dusty so thicker sand would be better. I also use pine shavings and hay for nests and it often goes all through the coop too haha. I prefer pine shavings for fresh smell but my chickens tend to eat it for some reason so I won't buy any more.
It's been cold except for a couple days
"hot year" is when 12 months have average temps higher than usual. all animals in such years give birth to more males. you can predict weather by male animal births, lol.

I have construction sand.. and lots of it. You pretty much have to dig and dig to hit the soil, which is like concrete when its dry and pb when its wet.. but there's enough sand to not be bothered by either scenario. But for you, id wonder how it would do not only w rain, but possibly iced/frozen water. Might make it difficult for your chickens, maybe too cold, but im not sure how cold it gets normally for you (minus the weird days that we are all getting).
