SILKIES ~ Updated pics on page17

Oh I'm really appreciative of your pics and sharing...it is helping...I do like them, but they just don't have that 'farm chicken' feel to them.....

The last one of the baby chicks...do you have a recent pic of 6 weeks old so I can see my future step by step...??? Thx

Silkies are the best! They are good with kids...They love hatching eggs and taking care of chicks. They are awesome mommas! They are SUPER MOMMAS! They even hatch rocks..LOL

They are one of the cutest baby chicks I have ever seen. They go through a ugly stage that is so ugly its cute..LOL They get very attached to there "People" They come in different colors different shapes and sizes...Different personalities. Some have big crest some do not some are really fluffy some are not. I have not met one silkie that I have not loved to look at or WANT! I have so many I have lost my mind to silkies..LOL I even keep the disable ones!

Ok I'll shut up...LOL and show some pics!

You are lucky, I wish I had a broody silkie hen. Although, I heard that silkies goes broody faster than other breeds. I live in Kuwait, where one silkie could cost 15 Dinars or 45 american dollars.

When I walk out in my yard the silkies run to me and want to be picked up and loved on. The are just the best more like a dog then a chicken.

This one is 6 week old.

I had three silkies mixed with two standard mutts. They flocked very well together. My girl just hatched two eggs from my Austrolop and Silkie Rooster mix. The rooster have been relocated recently, but we are hatching right now both silkies and mixed. My children love them and play with them all the time. I find them entertaining. Keep them.

That is Rocky and she was born a few days before Easter. I don't know the exact date though. I Rocky is about 4-5 weeks old. All the fluff are adult feathers growing in and the spikes on the top of her head are her adult feathers as well. (I thought she was a boy, but I posted her pic on the breed/gender forum and was told she was a she! And she was not growing streamers, like boys do, but adult crest feathers.) Below are some pics of her younger;

Now those are guesstimates on age - since I am not sure of her real birth date. Also, I have heard of people trimming the crest back so their silkies can see better. Oh and if you wanted you could trim the bum fluff too - to keep the poo from sticking if you don't want to put oil on that area.

Hope that helps!

Your silkies don't look like they have feathered out much at 3-4 wks. Are you sure they are silkies?

You should put your two brooders next to each other with hardware cloth on the sides so your BO & BR and silkies can see each other so you can put them together at some point.

Many people have the little ones in the same coop as the standards.

Sounds like you're not spending as much time with the silkies as you did with your first two. Give them a little grit and meal worms and they'll warm up to you.

I have 5 Silkies. None are over 7 weeks of age. I have been raising mine with my other chickens (RIR, sex-links, Mille Fleur d'Uccles). They all get along fairly well at this point.

The reason I love my Silkies is because they are so soft. It must be something tactile, almost therapeutic-like just stroking their "fur"/feathers. I really can't say I love them more than my other chickens, because I enjoy all of my chickies! But they are pretty cool creatures! All of my chickens seem "dog-like" at times, and I do enjoy it when they run to the chicken coop door when they see me coming.

Give yourself some time. They will definitely grow on you!

Silkies are the number One reason i decided to get chickens.

That said, I've lost 12 eggs to shipping and they just did not develop, and I have another 12 in the bator at day 4 and I see nothing inside. Send me your Silkies. I have none yet:(
