SILKIES ~ Updated pics on page17

I wasn't too sure at first either about my Silkies, but over the past week or so I have fallen in love with the little evil things

I am even thinking about how I can keep my Silkie roosters in a neighborhood that doesn't allow them! It must be love

I have a white silkie who we just confirmed is a roo after he began crowing at 13 weeks (very early for a silkie). In any case, we didn't want a Rooster but we fell so in love with him that he is staying!!! He is full of personality, gentle and EVERYONE who comes to visit my house just loves him because he is so unique an absolutely adorable. Those that visit who came as skeptics thinking chickens are chickens always end up changing their minds when they see him and understand why I keep them as pets. Plus, he is very entertaining. To see him running is just the best. I can't explain it but it just makes me laugh.

I have pics of him on my BYC page if you'd care to look.

My guy is 14 weeks old now and started crowing a week ago. He is surprisingly quiet when he crows and honestly, the neighborhood dogs are WAY louder than he is.

I have four...three are definately Roo's. The Blue ones I have stick together as do the white ones. I just got 6 more (one passed on) and I am excited. I hope they are hens but I guess that I will have to wait and see.

The are very sweet birds! Any clue as to how to identify a roo from a hen?

You really can't with a Silkie until it either Crows or lays an egg which from what I hear can be 8 or 9 months. Mine guy was a bit different though. He started to display roo like behaviors when he was 9 weeks or so and started to crow at only 13 weeks.

It is different with pet/hatchery quality silkies. I knew what my hatchery silkies were at 4 weeks old ( i dont have them anymore ), but I couldnt tell what my silkies from a breeder were until 6 months.

Here are some new pics of my 10 week old Hat Trick silkies. They're soooo pretty!!! I love to snuggle them.

I am certainly hoping for that with my roos. Of course, they may not be roos after all since I know it is hard to tell. They just have a bit larger comb than the others and are slightly larger in size overall.

Mine came from a breeder as well. Still maybe not show quality but at least I got to see Mom and Dad first.
