Hi all. I was hoping that one of my new chicks was a hen. She is definately the head peep right now. Her Rose comb is not red and she had small wattles. Does everyone agree?

Hi there, hope you are enjoying BYC! :frow

Definitely a cockerel. Those wattles are quite red. Also poor lacing is more typical of males though I'm not sure I've ever seen it quite that poor before. The comb also does look red to me and not pale pink. :hmm

Thinking male, as well. We have GLW ( male and female), and SLW (females)

@EggSighted4Life, we have a female SLW with terrible lacing, FWIW. She is 2 yo and I hoped that her hard molt would bring in better Laced feathers, but no such luck. She is good in the flock, and identifiable as SLW, but a poor example of lacing. As I understand it, lacing is one of the harder traits to get consistently nice, so I’m not surprised our SLW isn’t picture perfect.

Is it common for a rooster to roost and lay down if I stroke his back? She lays alot on me. Also she is from a feed store who orders from a hatchery. I really don't think her lacing is all that bad when I've compared her to other threads. Her chest is coming in very nicely.

What do you mean by roost?
And yes, that is common. Many roosters are very friendly before hormones kick in. And some remain very friendly even when full grown.
