Silver or coronation sussex??

Im new to the whole genetics thing as it pertains to chickens, could you further explain the crossings. I am currently bidding on some lavendar orpington eggs and I have some light sussex eggs on the way. If what your saying is correct then I should be able to produce coronations in about a year and a half correct?

This site will help you figure out what the offspring of various breedings will give you. It's lots of fun!

Thank you! How do we know what the breed carries though? I have BCMarans and let him play around with my Barred Rocks and Rhode Island and Polish for practice. I hatched out 3 chicks for fun. How would I know how to calculate the colors?

Yeah, that calculator is making me feel even dumber than when I started:D. Maybe I should play around a little more with it, but man this mad scientist stuff is complicated!

I use the show examples button to find what I'm looking for. I know there's one for BC Marans (bottom row, listed as red necked marans). RIRs are red columbian. Barred is there. Polish would depend on the color.

I dont understand how it doesnt fly? The bidding starts at 99 cents and ends at $365. What does that have to do with Greenfire's website or pricing? Im confused, supply and demand are clearly dictating the prices on the auctions. If the supply was higher then people obviously would bid less. Im not trying to argue with you just trying to see things from your perspective. I could understand your point if there were reserves on these auctions. I unfortunately missed out on a half dozen coronation eggs on a 24 hour auction a couple weekends ago. Evidently everyone did, the bidding started at 99 cents and closed without one bid! I am still kicking myself!

Thanks! I will have to try harder to understand this. One I grasp the concept I am sure it will be fun.

Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with crossing birds but what you will get in 2 generations will NOT be Coronation Sussex but Coronation Mutts. True the color is going to pop up but the type of the birds are different. This thread tells me to beware of the particular breed in the future. No doubt there will be eggs for sale and the people will be selling Coronation Sussex that will bomb if they were shown. Most people paying dearly for eggs or birds do so with the intention of showing them and perpetuating the breed in its pure form.

While the differences in the two birds is not as substantial as the Silkie and Cochins that I have crossed to make Sizzles, it will still take 6 to 7 generations to get back to the basic body type of the Sussex and that is if the subsequent generations are bred back to pure birds. Crossing is not a quick way to get the a particular color in any breed of bird. It depends on how much you care about the purity of the breed.

Greenfile has gone to the trouble of getting rare birds and offering them to the rest of us. They deserve to get whatever people are willing to pay for them. We have had Blue Orpington eggs sell for $ 600 right here on BYC. Fortunately the people paying that price were buying birds for their exquisite confirmation and bloodlines and will breed them with integerity

Black Copper Marans eggs were selling for prices off the charts two years ago. They are no longer demanding the price that they once did. The price of any of these import birds come down once there is a supply. There is usually controversy regarding the breed because people have bought them and then diluted the blood lines with other breeds, as happened the Serama.

As always buyer beward.

Well, don't worry about me. I won't be selling any Coronation chicks. This is going to be a fun project only and a good learning experience.
Personally I prefer the Light Sussex. The Coronations don't have the same egg laying capacity- but they are pretty.

Well my point is that the bidding may not being the only thing driving the prices up. The prices that are on the website are what they expect to get for those birds, and this may have been set by the bidding on eggbid, but there are ways to drive up those bids, and we all know that. My point is that there never is and never will be half a dozen eggs that are going to get as much as my house payment. Now, when we see birds sell for these prices, that is totally different because you can see what they are, their type, coloration, ect. But with the chance of hatching birds that could be Coronation (or light or...or...or..well you get the point). When ordering eggs, nothing is guarenteed and for those prices, that is lunacy!
