First, here's what you're looking for in a brooder (place to raise the chicks):
1. Enough space for the birds, feeder, watered, and a small perch.
2. High sides so they can't fly/ jump out
3. Safe place to clip a heat lamp
4. Poo-proof, we don't want a messy floor beneath the enclosure.

I have found that the cardboard melon bins work best!!! Nearly EVERY grocery store has Watermelon/pumpkin/cantaloupe/squash/or some kind of bulk produce in those 3'x4' cardboard bins. (Pictured)

These work perfect, and they're free!

They have a solid wall with no gaps- but pick up a few pallet covering pieces of cardboard - basically the look like flat 3x4 cardboard sheets. These make the bottom poo-proof and can be easily swapped out if soiled.

I know its common, you just dont see it posted anywhere. Hopefully a newbie sees this and avoids a costly/permanent-style brooder they wont need after a few weeks.
