Hi, I'm new to BYC. I had a variety pack of layers (oh look, colors!) many years ago in another life but had to leave them when I left the spouse. Hated leaving them, missed my girls and their chatter.
Always knew I wanted hens again someday and it turned out this year was the year to do it. We jumped in with both feet. Started out with 8 red sex-link hens and 2 roosters from someone who wanted to decrease their flock to only 2 hens. We knew the 2 roosters was too many for 8 hens so were trying to decide which one to keep when the decision was made for us; one of the roosters became aggressive towards us, trying to attack every time we were around, even when it was just to feed and water them. We practiced our chicken processing technique on him, leaving us with 8 hens and 1 rooster. Added 3 blue Orpingtons because I thought they were pretty and we wanted a few more layers.
This week we added 14 amberlinks (about 6 months old, 12 or 13 are hens, 1, possibly 2, are cockerels) and 3 gold-laced wyandottes (2 pullets, 1 cockerel about 5 months old). They are currently in a holding area, kept separate from our flock.
I'm here to learn more about integrating new birds into a flock and then simply to learn more about chickens in general and talk to others who love chickens.
