Shudder.......

Sorry Alaskan! You're right! Low 40's in VA but sunny. Snow/ice forecasted for Wednesday and just below freezing every night next week but that's pretty normal for us. Come on Spring! Glad you have your power back!

Thank you!

I don't usually mind having the power out, except that I had things planned for yesterday!

Normal weather is good.

The kids are happy, they were starting to think that they were never going to get to ski this winter.

Those were some great funnies.

Made me more cheerful.

Our power went out sometime last night, just came back up.

I was supposed to do lots of cooking today... ha!

So we just cooked stuff on the top of the wood stove, and I didn't get the stuff done that I needed to get done.

I had to drink instant coffee! But, why?

You can boil water and "cut" beans (as my DS calls it, he's 4), and put them together, then strain the beans out of it. You have to "cut" them larger for this method (akin to French press w/o the pressing part) than for drip or espresso, but at least it's real coffee.

We were just starting to get all the generators running for the neighbor houses (we don't have one for us since we have a wood stove), and had one going in fits for about 3 hours, and had two more generators to set up, I had just started up the pow truck to plow all the roads and parking lots since we now had over a foot of snow and the blizzard with gusts of over 70 miles an hour had finally died down..... when the power came back on!

How was that for a run on sentence?

My 15yrold just left the room in a huff since I told him he didn't get to cook supper at 10pm. (we did already eat)

AH!

I have a thawed out goose, I have rendered the fat, gonna make apple pie crust with the fat.

Goose fat is the best animal fat for you, second only to fish fat. AND, it tastes divine!

Waiting for it to cool, gonna start roasting the goose in a bit.

The gluten free, three different kinds of chocolate, goose egg, pecan cake just came out of the oven.

Again,

And, yep, drinking my coffee! Hot and TASTY fresh!
Now I want geese.
Make me not want geese, Alaskan.
Are they messy like ducks?

It's almost to 50 degrees here and the sun just peeked through the clouds. -nice tomorrow and then a return to cold/cold precipitation. -really have extremes.......can be 22 for the high one day, and literally a week later it can be 72. -no predictability. -ever.....

-sitting with a cup of afternoon coffee. -hubby is working. The teen is hanging out with friends, and the college 'kid' is still asleep. He'll probably wake and make his way to the kitchen in a few. -think I'll just enjoy the peace and quiet.
caf.gif
Our ten-day forecast says 40s at night, 60s during the day, repeat ad nausium!!! Oh, and throw some precipitation in there to keep them from begin able to do laundry at will.

What is this "peace and qu-qu-qu-i-e-t, um qui-et" of which you speak???
JK; I have four kids and the youngest is just starting to sleep through the night (at 4 yo). >there's no sleeping emoticon< or one that looks like it hasn't been sleeping

AHEM. ACORNS.

Well, I had white fluffy things falling from the sky all yesterday, accompanied by the gale force winds..... so doesn't that mean that proper winter weather is back in Alaska and you folks Outside the lovely state of Alaska should be having proper for you all weather?

Trying to talk myself into getting off of the cough and starting COFFEE and work....

self is responding with "I don't wanna and you can't make me!" My self must have been watching the kids too much.

You gotta watch what kind of examples you let yourself see. Selves are immitative creatures, you know.

Note to all you all!

Goose fat pastry for apple pie:
sickbyc.gif

I test baked a tiny bit first before turning it into pie, and, well,
sickbyc.gif

So, I did my standard super good Crisco pie crust.
droolin.gif
It might not be healthful, but it sure is GOOD! The stuff that was going to be goose fat pie crust I turned into goose fat drop biscuits. THOSE were very good. Especially since we had them with goose fat gravy and slow cooked goose! After we sat down, I realized that I could have served asparagus or carrots too. But the meal of fat, fat, fat, and heavy cream sure was good! My spouse got caught at a bake sale, so wasn't home to see what I was serving for dinner.
lau.gif

As to geese:

1. they are larger than chickens or ducks, so less things can kill them, so it is easier to have them free range

2. they eat almost %100 grass, TRULY! and they just mow it off, they don't kill it right off like chickens.

3. they grow like crazy, so eat them all before you have to pen them up for the winter and worry about the mess.

4. If you want them to mow your lawn evenly, you will need to have a child assigned as goose herder....so you need a 5 year old (old enough to work, young enough that it doesn't need to do any school, so the child can sit out ALL day long and herd
lau.gif
)

5. For some reason they like taking a siesta every day on the front walk to the front door...and they poop every 7 minutes.

Have you tried Leaf Lard?

It sounds delicious. Am I invited to dinner?

I have heard of Leaf Lard, but now I don't actually remember what it is.

Silly me.

It is rendered far from over the kidneys in a pig. It makes very good pie dough. It is like regular lard but does not have as much Piggy taste to it.

I rendered some last winter after a friend butchered some pigs.
