The box you type your post in is called the editor. At the top, there is a bar with a lot of tools for working with your posts. At the far right, there's a smiley face. Click on it, and a window with a bunch of smileys pops up.

Click on one, and it will appear in your post.


And I guess it isn't a hard-and-fast rule against having more than one post on the same topic, but we are sort of encouraged to show a bit of restraint when it comes to starting new threads, particularly when it comes to these social threads.

Nope. Look up to the top of your text editor box. There is a little smiley face up there. Click on it and smileys will magically appear.
