Yep, most of Alaska gets pretty manic in the summer time. Even the plants are manic.

Truly, we all know that there is a very limited amount of time before it is all over and the hand of winter smacks us down again.

Hi Mitch,

Was wondering something.  Just had my end of year physicals, checkups, etc.  Seems I'm in not in very good health so my whole lifestyle must change (I'm retired).  Borderline diabetes is my major concern and of course fish and chicken will be my new meat source pretty much altogether.  I live in South Dakota and we have extremely cold winters so here is my question.  Is it really worth carrying chickens over thru the winter with the cost of lighting, heating, food, watering and building a structure.  I will not have an attachment to my chickens like it seems most do.  I have house dogs and besides my  wife, they are my next love in this household.

If you want only meat, just buy chicks every spring. You will still need quality housing, because everything wants to eat chicken.

If you want eggs, you really need to keep them year round.

Read through some of the info in the Learning Center. There is lots there. Also look through the coop pages.
There is lots of information on this site about
- building a coop with close to no money (the duck coop I built this summer cost me less than $10
- chickens over the winter with no light and no heat
- different ways to make the feed budget stretch with free foods and growing your own chicken feed etc.

And, I love my chickens, and my boys love the chickens too. But, the boys now help me process them. We even sometimes eat the ones we name. No tears, no problems.

ouch. im sorry i had two of my top ones removed and well i hope the doctors are better there than here. when i got both of mine out the doctors didnt care about whether or not your gums were even numb and pretty much i felt everything. so i hope you have a better experience. eat lots of ice cream and soups and yogurt and all that good stuff.

My son had all four removed when he was about 17. -was back to his usual "bottomless pit appetite" and ability to do anything he pleased shortly thereafter. I'm old.....older.

-just hoping to be able to set some dinner on the table for the family and finish out the day with the chicken chores without issues. -not too worried.

It is better to get this done at 42 though. I only had two wisdom teeth on the top. One came in and was hurting the other teeth so the dentist pulled it. We both had a bad experience, so I went to an oral surgeon to have it removed. I was 20 at the time and it was a bit of a recovery.
