Sitting with a cup of coffee. (coffee lovers)

No one checks my thread anymore....

So, I'll just tell you all about yesterday....
I butchered three of my five Leghorn-mix cockerels (well, they were crowing, but I call them cockerels b/c I wasn't going to keep them, so they weren't going to be flock roosters....

anyway)
Also, my little six week Marans cockerel was dead in the brooder this morning. I'm not surprised; he was acting sick and nothing I did helped him. Such is life with chickens....

I hate losing them, especially to illness; it makes me feel like I did something wrong, even though I take good care of my chickens and I do everything I can for each one when they're not feeling well.

I candle my eggs from the 'bator tomorrow night; I'm beside myself.

Evening everyone!
just relaxing with my favorite mug listening to the rain. A well needed, steady solid downpour. Means I don't have to drag out the hoses tomorrow

Made a trip into town this morning, which borders on insanity on a Saturday up here during tourist season, to go to the farmer's market. Very few veggies available up here yet but I got a nice organic free range chicken for Sunday dinner, some wonderful garlic and chive soft goat cheese and fresh Amish baked bread to smear it on, yum! Supper tonight was BLT's made with Nueske's maple bacon and of course slabs of the Amish bread, heaven. The seller with the chicken had some really nice looking heritage turkey pullets for only $10 a piece and I was really tempted but I just don't have the room. Unable to pass up a chance at enabling however, I called my neighbor and told her about them

Yay for mugs!!!
Yay for well-needed downpours!!!
Yay for enabling!!!

Gotta go take care of the chickens.
DD helps, and I've got to get DS in bed. Hopefully, putting him to bed a bit on the late side will me I get to sleep past 6 am.....

I'm sorry, I don't know which thread is yours. I hate it when i don't know why a chicken dies. I get paranoid something is going to sweep thru my flock and kill everyone

I haven't gotten the nerve to start incubating eggs yet but now I wish I had shoved a few under my broody.

Totally me too! My #3 set of ducklings just hatched, and they were NOT as good as set 1 or 2. I think the problem is that the $&%# eggs had twelve thousand different due dates... So the humidity has had too many ups. (I am thinking I also need to work on improving the nutrition of my breeders... For next year) Anyway, this last set, two were breach, and two that hatched fine (not breach) ended up passing after about two days. The last two that hatched don't look all that great either.... Not sure if they will make it either. I did get 8 very healthy ones though. Remember, this set of perpetual hatching is because something scared my ducks half to death, and they all abandoned their nests simultaneously, and ALL of those eggs then had to be crammed into the incubator. Looked at the last two that hatched, that don't look so great...I wonder if it is an infection thing. All of those chickens and then ducklings hatching and then climbing over and pooping all over the still incubating eggs.....had NOT been good for cleanliness. I am almost tempted to toss out the last 5 duck eggs that are in there, so that I can scrub the entire thing out! Maybe I will see how wiggly they are tomorrow, and decide from there. Sad.

Welcome @BunnyTheSlayer !!!!!

Way too much to catch up! So sorry @TeaChick ! :hugs I hope things start looking up. I wish I had more time to read your thread! I wish I had a couple of clones to free up my schedule! ! !

Good luck to everyone hatching!!! :yesss: More chickies! In a couple of weeks I'm supposed to get a Frizzle chick or 2 or 3 hehehe! Excited!

Have had a very busy week. And this weekend I have been working on finishing the Chicken Run!! Yay! :woot Only a few more things to take care of and it will be finally all closed in and predator proof! Then I can paint and tweak the inside with re-movable dividers!

I have also been treating my EE Naome (she was" No Name" for quite awhile when I first got her) she has vent gleet. :( so far so good but if all else fails I will have to give her some Medistatin. Extra $$ that I don't really have right now.
Time for some Zzzzz so I can get an early start before we get t hot and humid tomorrow.

Have a good night and everyone enjoy their coffee in the morning!

[@=/u/135917/chickwhispers]@chickwhispers[/@] :sick and also :hugs on the vent gleet.

Marvelous on new chickies and an almost finished run! :D

Thank You!  And uh - Yeah on the  :sick  and a little of this :rant too! I think she was eating way too many fermenting mulberrys. :hit I treated her for worms too just in case,

It is no fun having to treat our flock for any bug..
I added a extra scoop to grind for coffee this morning.. But now having a beer.. We will be brewing this winter.. Do any of ya all brew & give the spent grains to your flock?? We started a new thread.

I LOOOOOOOOOVE COFFEE!

I live in Texas, the heavenly land of HEB grocery stores. Their store brand (Cafe Ole!) coffee is great, and they have a "Houston Blend" which is magnifique!!

If I can't have that, I like most Sumatra grinds or Breakfast Blends.

I enjoy my coffee with a pinch of stevia and tbsp of half & half.

Welcome to BYC.
