Good Day Everyone!!! Meet Lucie and Ethel from Silkieville! These are my two adorable and inseparable silkies. They do everything together, even went broody together already!
I may have to get more!!! Although I had 4 roosters DSO didn't want to hear them so they got rehomed earlier this year to wonderful people from the Michigan thread! I miss the roos they were so adorable too!

and your @ronott1 your DW as well!!! I love motorcycles but not what I have seen what an accident can do.

It's crisp here (read cold) got down to 35o here this morning. According to our extended forecast I had better get my outdoor chores and painting finished up in the next couple of weeks!

Tell me, are little Silkies very cold hardy? I love them and think it would be cute to have a couple little "bug eaters" running around. Just we are true Polar Vortex country with very long winters.

Ron is your DW doing better since her surgery? I hope she is and like chickisoup said I also pray that she will not have any pain from it later on.

She is in a real cast now that goes up to the elbow.

She should have been in one from the beginning--after the ligament was fixed. It has been 7 weeks since the crash and they fixed the ligament 6 weeks late.

She is doing better now and I am sure all will heal. I bet she will be able to predict a rain storm from now on though.

Gotta love modern medicine. The Dr. that fixed the radius break likely did not know about the ulna joint--He would have needed to read the whole report and the Ulna was reduced in Emergency. It may not have made it to the records and the "team" member that fixed it may not have ever been to a "Team" meeting.....

Silkies are not cold hardy. They are not rain hardy. They can jump but not fly and they often cannot see well so in the rain they need to be picked up and moved to safety. They are also prone to brain injuries if they have a vaulted skull.

If you want working chickens do not get them. If I had them, I would make a Barbie coop and put it right out the back door. They would be there on the cement slab most of the time; ready for me to go out and cuddle with them....

Get Cochins if you want broody hens.

Silkies are more cold hardy than many think. They are not however cold and wet hardy. The feathers lack the little barbs that hold them together to create the water resistance needed. The feathers blow around more in the wind but I see from many on BYC that their silkies are the first to go outside in the cold. My good friend gave me mine and hers were out this last winter in the coldest temps but she kept them in for the windy days. Also many do not use any extra heat or insulation or only insulate. If you think you might want some just get enough so they can huddle together because more often than not silkies will pile up in a corner of the coop whether its cold or hot rather than roost. I would recommend that you search on BYC of silkie owners for info before you decide. They would be the perfect indoor chicken if you were to have any indoors!

My silkies did fine last winter in the Kansas City cold, all survived and no frost bite. One of mine is brooding her third clutch this summer. Her last clutch she hatched four of seven brahma large fowl eggs.

When I was growing up, Dr. Pepper was a coffee substitute. It would be warmed up in the morning to have instead of coffee. Mt. Dew seems to be doing the same thing now, especially in the Southern United States. Does anyone warm it up?

My DWs sister is a big Mt. Addict.

I'm in the south and I'm guilty of overdoing Mountain Dew! I don't put it in the fridge, it stays in the box in the cabinet at room temperature. I chug a dew first thing as my coffee is brewing.

Ugh. There used to be soft drink called "Jolt." Its selling point was that it was made with sugar, not HFCS, and it had twice as much caffeine as the other sodas. Now they've dumped the fizz and call them "energy drinks." Gads, they even come coffee flavored - seems kinda twisted to me.

I remember Jolt it came out my last year in High School.....

Mountain Dew is sneaky.... it has twice the caffeine in it as other soft drinks. I used to let my son drink it because Hey it was a clear drink... Clear drinks dont have caffeine....

A very crispy morning here. Had to wait til the temp hit 32oF before sending hubby out
turn the girls loose this morning, brrrrrrr. Think we will attempt a trip to town today.
We figured out how to get me into Walmart!

I can only go a few feet with the walker
because my "good" leg has a damaged knee (my horse fell on me when I was in my 20's,
had surgery that they no longer do because they later figured out it eventually destroyed the
joint-no kidding) and won't support my full weight for more than that. Anyway, our Walmart
will let hubby park in front of the door and drive their electric cart out to me!

Wow. you just don't realize how great the little things we take for granted really are until
you lose them, like being able to go grocery shopping. I've always tried to give a helping
hand to anyone who needed it but now I have a whole new understanding and empathy for
those struggling with either a temporary (like me) or permanent physical disability.

Sorry you are hobbling around. Hopefully it is a short time.

My DW is in the temp category. She will be able to get around soon but now struggles to walk in the store. Motorcycle accident, bruised knee and bone, fractured foot, broken wrist with plate and pins and last week surgery to repair a detached ligament in the same broken wrist, other bone.

Ouch! I too, did not realize she took such a bad spill. Hopefully she is on the mend.

He doesn't stand still very much. Unfortunately, we are going to have to get rid of him. Too many boys in a mixed flock. Anyone near Arkansas in the market for a pretty bird?

Yesterday we went to The Castle at Muskogee which has a Halloween festival every weekend in October. The kids had a blast. We are ready for more haunted houses now.
