I miss those drugs! They were great for animal wounds. They also help with allergic reactions to insect bites.... and yes I know drowsiness is a side effect. here you can get all sorts of medications for dogs cats and livestock. From innoculations to antibiotics.... yet they pulled sulfa drugs off the shelf because they can be used for treating gun shot wounds.... Go figure.
Sulfamillimide (sp?) powder was the main ingredient of my horse mentors homemade salve. Yellow powder mixed with lard and a liniment.... Was great for wounds... Horses have a tendency to remove their skin down to pink just jostling around or playing halter tag....
I have made my own using antiseptic foot powder and lard. Not quite as good but works to keep the wound soft and the bugs off and promote healing.

On Saturday the second wave is due to hatch. Hope to get some really cute pics of ones there: Blue marans and BLRW. Besides, little Solo needs a friend. Being real quiet, though. All is good.
I love chick pix, though. They're SO cute!

My mentor used to get them at the Commissary.... Her husband was a Navy Chief with hash marks up his sleeves. You can get sulfa powders on line but I havent a clue as to what percentage she used.
here is one on Amazon
And its said to be used in the garden and for preserving dried apricots.... Would be worth a try.
She always warned us not to use it on a deep cut though. Unless you are willing to abraid the wound to keep it from sealing over and causing an abscess. And if you have horses Granular flesh overgrowth is an issue. So legs and joints where that is an issue should be watched closely.

It's been awhile since I've done horses... Are we talking about Furox? I remember some sort of yellow stuff that was both a spray and an ointment that worked well on wounds. Then there was Blu-Kote (always a mess) and something that reduced the incidence of granular tissue that, I swear, smelled like fish that you daubed on.
