Sitting with a cup of coffee. (coffee lovers)

OK, 8 very cute and now healthy quail... we took their 'shoes' off this morning... and all toes look perfect, never would have known that there were issues.

of the 2 problem chicks... one died on its own, the other refused to get better, but also refused to die.

I just sent kid #2 to feed it to drake. drake is much better at putting them down than I am. He is such a good drake, drake. -sigh- (yes, we call him "drake, drake")

kid just came back, turns out Kuhflecken got the quail, and such a super good girl too, she ran right up to it and killed it super fast. I could never be as merciful and effective as my Muscovy. Sure is helpful having them.

Ducks kill baby chicks? I never knew... Good the rest are OK - so do baby ducks and baby chicks need to be kept separTely? We were thinking of getting baby chicks and baby ducks in April when the snow and ice melts around here...

the adult Muscovy are major meat eaters...

they love bait fish, and anything meat. Their little hook on their beak helps them rip meat off of big bones.

So I do feed them defective/problem quail chicks (whatever baby quail are called). The quail are so tiny, the Muscovy snap them up, smash/crush them super fast and then swallow them whole. In a blink.

Deb, they are NOT good with rodents, because the rodents move to dang fast. My ultimate rodent catcher, kid #2 has to hit the rodent to stun it, then toss it to the Muscovy. I made the mistake of giving them a peppy rodent once.... the rodent just ran off.

I haven't given them defective chicken chicks to eat.... I worry that they might look too much like ducklings (similar size) and I do not want them turning into duckling eaters.

My Muscovy ducklings are super sweet, and have let me put variously aged ducklings together without trouble..... unlike the issues that are so common with differently aged chicken chicks.

yep...

Someone I sold my Muscovy to sent me a video... she put feeder goldfish into a water pan, her runner ducks and the Muscovy loved eating them all out.

I never give mine live fish, but they get left over dead bait fish, and when I take bones out to the chickens, I give some to the Muscovy.

The Muscovy will also take that hook bill and dig through rotting logs to find grubs.
