Happy St. Patricks day!!!

Good coffee this morning.

Who ever is out there doing the broody dance for me - Thanks. I have a girl who has settled in. Been steady on the nest since Saturday so today she gets to keep her eggs. She's a first timer so we'll see how she does. I will be home starting Thursday to keep an eye on things so I am excited to watch her sit!

Two more days of work!

My 2 cents -- I think pets as gifts should only be given by parents or with the parents approval and the full understanding of the commitment and care. And should be age appropriate, a family pet and never an impulse gift. A youngster who has never had a pet is not going to instantly know how to take care of one nor remember everything to do either.

I agree. Aside from having horses .. I have had pets of varying kinds all my life. Even worked in a fairly large pet shop for a few years. As a kid I caught snakes and brought them home much to my moms Chagrin... I would keep them a while set up a vivarium for them then after a few months would return them to the wild in an area similar to where I caught them. And the usual dogs, cats, Birds, Aquarium fish. Built my first aviary when I was about twenty...

I never gave my son a pet that I wasn't fully ready to care for myself. I even raised up red eared sliders from hatch-lings... Cute little stinky buggers in the house... They were the cause for me to build a turtle pond in the front yard. Went from about a fifty cent piece size to the about seven inches across in about six or seven months. Those were mine from the get go....

but what ever critter we had we were constantly learning about Reading husbandry info and feed and care info...

My mother's maiden name was Donnella Charlotte Sylvan Fitzpatrick. You should have seen me trying to fill out those school forms with that. I think I was half way to high school before I could even spell it!

My 2 cents on the giving baby critters as holiday "gifts". Unfortunately, a lot of the time the problem is not the recipient but the giver not having a clue what they are really giving. My other beef are unscrupulous retailers. I REALLY REALLY hate the ones that encourage impulse buying by dying the poor little chicks, ducks, etc. pretty colors to make them more "attractive" to clueless shoppers.

Totally with you Perchie. I have no idea how many critters I have had. As a kid I was always always dragging home some poor lost critter. At one point I literally had my own "zoo". That included, BTW, one VERY large Belgium hare named Abernathy B. Rabbit that learned how to open his cage, the back screendoor and come into the house looking for someone to play with him. He would stomp his feet to get attention and throw a fit if he didn't get it. Boy, if he got mad he could rattle the windows! Even as a kid I had the good sense to grab whatever book I could to learn about an animal and never lost sight that none of my menagerie were little "people" no matter how hard they tried to be!

I also know that most kids need to be taught that and parents that have enough common sense of their own to teach it.

I must have rubbed off on one of my granddaughters. She's about to graduate from Monroe University and take a position as a zoo keeper in Texas!!!!!

LOOKING FOR HELP - does anyone know if there is a recent thread on here about coop cams? I'm thinking of putting one in/around my coop but have no clue what would be best or how difficult it would be to set up. I am sure there are knowledgeable folks on here who could help but the only threads I could locate are pretty old.

Happy St. Patrick's Day! (Anyone having Irish coffee?)

I'd prefer Bailey's in mine...but, alas, not today as I'm still mired in doing the taxes and need a non-fuzzy head to clear this wallow of papers and receipts. This first part of the morning when the coffee is hot, it's quiet and everyone else is asleep is divine...it's like total *me time* without having any hoops to jump through or obligations to attend to in the present moment. Yeah, it all can wait. There's deep tranquility to be enjoyed in this mug.

I love hearing you complain about your taxes... sounds just like me!

I haven't started yet.. REALLY should have, because I have all the sorts of problems you do... but I forgot about stuff that was supposed to be turned in last Friday, trying to quickly get that done, and then there are mountains of other things this week, which should roll to a stop on Saturday... anyway... BLAH!!!

@chickisoup I wasn't offended, and I hope I didn't offend you. It's just that, after breeding rabbits for so long, I have gotten tired of being villified and seeing the animals get villainized because of the ignorance and irresponsibility of other people. I have known plenty of rabbits that were wonderful pets - I have even had a few that I bred a couple of times, then re-homed because I felt they deserved an owner that would give them more attention than I could. But I also show people a scar on my wrist that was put there 14 years ago by the bite of a rabbit that was nothing short of vicious - I don't kid myself about what they are capable of.

IMO, pets make lousy gifts - unless the person is expecting it, and has educated themselves enough to know what to expect from it. After all, we've all heard the warning about the proverbial "gift horse," right?

Sun is shining but the wind is really howling and cold so it's a good day to curl up with a nice hot mug of coffee and get caught up with all the BYC chatter

But now the corned beef and cabbage should be all done so it's time to heat up the soda bread so the butter will soak in and dig into that big pot goodness.
