And now, while you are sitting with your coffee, please advise: can I/shouldI/would you put baby chicks and baby ducks together in the same big brooder box?

We want to get three baby ducks and three baby chicks from Tractor Supply in April...

Ducks are very very messy... Unless your brooder box is on wire probably not good for the chicks. I would do a partition between them... Wire would work.

I started with orthodontics when I was 5 and had everything from a herpst appliance to lip bumper to braces to head/neck gear to retainers until I was 13. It was horrible! My teeth are even though lol

I think that the problem with raising them together, is then a male duck will think it is a chicken, and try to breed the hens... Which might hurt them, or even kill them.

If you know they are all girls... Then I think the only issue is feed... You need UN medicated chick feed, and add some nutritional yeast (often called brewers yeast).

The farm grade nutritional yeast is WAY less expensive than the human grade.

We did this fall and they were fine together until the drake started becoming mature. Then he became very aggressive toward the chickens and we had to get rid of him. We still have a hen in with the chickens and one stupid roo has been trying to mate her so he is off to auction shortly. We did not have a problem the ducks being in with the chicks in the brooder box. Yes, they certainly are messy with the water as they like/need to get it on their nares but we just had a wet spot and we would add/remove shavings occasionally as needed. I might also add our brooder box was a giant cardboard box in the garage that we discard when we are finished brooding. Ducklings don't require a pool until they get their feathers as they can get wet and chilled while they just have baby fluff.

Cool thanks everyone! I also just finished reading a ton of duck stuff right here on BYC - I always just go to this thread - and I found lots of good information. Unmedicated chick feed for ducks with animal grade brewer's yeast.

:weee

And everyone is laying again finally agter the cold dark winter - seven eggs today from 8 chickens!
