Haha! Thanks, Deb! You're so sweet!!!

Now that is funny!!! Gotta love chicken math. With that example I pretty much just spent $$$ on one big, fancy Outhouse being that all mine are still young haha

Same here. We don't get enough eggs to sell, we use all we get, so... Big Fat feed bill for a big fat old goose egg in sales. lol

Still keeping up on the Avian Flu?
This link give info on the virus where it is at and who is affected commercial or BYC. yes there have been BYC cases
http://www.aphis.usda.gov/wps/porta.../sa_detections_by_states/ct_ai_pacific_flyway

I am thinking if anyone wants Turkey for thanks giving best to get it now before they are all gone! If you buy fresh you may need to freeze one this year or get to growing one up. not much time left for that though.

Cheers to healthy flocks for all!

DH just read the other night (that's when he decides it's time to do the news) that Kentucky is restricting bird sales...IDK...in and out of the state???...within the state??? I don't remember (I'm the morning person around here and he's the night owl).

Sicilian Buttercup Pullets

Assorted Rare Pullets
I started reading the Breeds on here
There was also lavender Oph........ For $40 each. Daw would have a cow if I did that. ( but then I'd have Milk)

I think good layer, plays well with others.

Congrats!!!
I got a rare breeds asst in Feb (w/ some NHs). There was one SB, but the NH chicks picked on it and she didn't make it. I'm hoping to get more another time; she was super sweet the day and a half that I had her.
Yes, Orpingtons are good layers and do play well with others (they can be victims of bullying if you have aggressive breeds though).

Ignore the horror....stick head in sand

Soooooo @Chicken Ladies the buttercup is one of my favorite colors! Gorgeous birds!

Hi all

As for the bird flu here, just less than an hour ago our state dept, of Ag. FINALLY, after several conflicting and confusing rulings, they handed down their final rulings in two restrictions. The first being a "total ban on any poultry moving to or participating in any and all swaps, auctions and shows that are not held as part of a state, county or district fair". The second, " requires all fair organizers to have participants certify in writing that there have been no mortalities on their premises for 10 calendar days prior to moving their poultry to the event." Both orders are in effect until December 31, 2015.

Don't know if they have lifted any bans on privately transporting birds across county lines yet.

Looks like I won't be looking for my Blue Aussie ladies any time soon unless I somehow can get pullets shipped in

Ten calendar days??? Is that long enough?
Hope you're able to get pullets shipped in then! =)

The Grossest Day I Ever Had!
So this punk showed up a couple of days ago all by it self and has been avoiding me like the plague!
Last night my DH brought in the old ham tray I use for chicken treats with this in it!
I am calling it Ham for now but it is in rough shape which proved even worse as the day progressed. I had to wash it a couple of times cuz it pooed on itself it weighs less than a sheet of paper and so I wanted to hold off on the flea and trauma bath until it at least had a real poop. That has not been the experience so far. After drying it off with a towel from the second leg and bum washing the skin on her hip opened up and miniature maggots started crawling out! This has got to be the grossest thing I have ever seen! I washed them all out with Vinegar and water and gave her a bath in Dawn dish soap to kill fleas and filled all holes on her bottom with antibiotic cream. She survived that but I am not sure she will make it, I will give her the best shot I can cuz ewwww. She is now occupying my Chicken medical crate with food water litter and a heating pad. since all my brooders are full!

I have done pet rescue in the past and bottle fed many different species of animal cleaned nasty wounds and fixed mucked up ears and eyes. But I have never encountered something like this! according to the internet it is not so uncommon. Has anyone ever? any healing suggestions or what to watch for?

I suspect she is 4 - 6 weeks old.

The first thing I have to say is:
sickbyc.gif

I hope she makes it and does well (and decides to like you).

Hmm I thought tape worms were flat and long.

these things were small round and it took hornet spray to kill the ones that did come off her. I did not spray the kitten with hornet spray I used a vinegar / water blast to make them leave the wound cavity and it worked pretty well since doc didn't see anything inside the wound.

I know the first rule is to bring some to the vet but in all honesty I did not think DH would allow me to take it to the vet. He is a do at home guy animals or human.
No, the segments are broken off pieces and the look like maggots:

Tapeworm didn't even cross my mind.

I was under the impression that the segments would look like segments. Kind of like a grain of rice, as it is often described. I didn't expect it to be this long and squirm around.

Nope they look like little maggots.... Ive seen em crawling out of a dogs behind once...

each segment is autonomous...

Link to a short article on tape worms... thankfully no pictures.. my fav

Hmmm I have done lots of subQ shots for penicillin with baby goats. How big of a dosage? She is not terribly dehydrated just starved I think she has been drinking the over splash from under the pool deck. (we have a salt water pool.) A little but not bad and I have her on Canned food right now and am feeding her eggs as well. less grains and more moisture in the cans.
I also suspect she has survived on Chicken treats and fermented chicken feed so far. Which is a really poor diet for a Kitten
She is pretty stressed tonite and understandably so. I am going to let her rest and will check on her before bed. Make sure nothing else is coming out of her skin lesion and put some more goop on it.

When one of our dogs got Parvo, the vet gave him an entire unit (like a unit of blood given by IV) sub-Q. It was so much "water" (saline) that it threw him off balance. We had to carry him back to the van the first few days; after that he staggered, but we were so glad he was feeling well enough to "walk" on his own.
Obviously, you'd use way less on a kitten, but IDK how much. I'd just hate for you to end up giving her too little not realizing how much she could actually handle that way (sub-Q).
I sure do hope that everything is going well and that you keep us updated on her! =)

Daw wants Blue eggs! Here I'm showing pictures of Hens & all she wants to know is... What color are the eggs.

Me too. I want blue eggs, and green ones and dark green ones and...well, I have pink, but they're less pink than they used to be, and my speckled ones aren't as much speckled as they are just rough and I get more brown eggs than I care to think about.
Blue Ameraucanas, that's what you want! Those lay blue eggs. And Legbars (not leghorns) lay blue eggs. Also, Easter Eggers lay blue, turquoise and green eggs, and Olive Eggers lay dark green eggs; those two breeds are a certain amount of Araucana and other breeds.

Too rough I think. If she makes it to morning I will call my vet There are even those nasty maggot thingies in her stool. She hasnt eaten in 8.5 hrs so I am forcing some egg milk with cat vitamins in her for now. Poor Poor baby both my oldest daughter and my DH said they couldnt have cleaned that wound. I didnt think about it just cleaned it cuz I took it in to take care of it, Might be kinder to off her but I am not sure I can.

Wondering if I should feed some olive oil to clear out digestive track?

I couldn't either. I'll clean up anything that comes out of a human; the younger they are, the easier it is for me. But animals, I can't handle that. I'm such a wimp when it comes to that, that my DH actually told me that I was going to have to kill my own chickens when freezer camp time came. I told him I'd intended to all along, and looked at him incredulously. I couldn't believe that he didn't know that I would fully expect to cull my own livestock.

Ok so doc ( who is the partner not the one I arrange to see) thinks she is a survivor. He also couldn't tell me male or female without having to put on gloves "Because he would have to touch it and was not going to do that" ( she pooed herself on the way to the vet they cleaned her off but not good enough I guess) Anyway! She is very anemic and would have been the perfect candidate for blood transfusion EXCEPT she is so starved the only vein available would most likely only be the arterial neck veins and "That would probably pose more of a risk than not doing it" " Absolutely No sigh of Maggots So either she never had them
rant.gif
or I must have got them all
idunno.gif
" She tested positive for tape worms and hook worms. She can be treated for the hook worms but must wait to be treated for the tape worms as she is not old enough. (They judge Kitten age by weight only not activates.) they know she is at least a week old because that is how long it took me to catch her. By weight she is 3 or 4 weeks old 15 oz but I thought kittens couldn't run until like 6 weeks. and
old.gif
she was running. They said she might be older because she is very skinny and I should not have given her Chicken food for so long. it is not the best diet for her.
he.gif
. Her Body temp was only 95 deg. For the Fleas not old enough so bathe real good with dawn dish soap every couple of days until Fleas are gone.

So She is on...
amoxidrops 15ml 2x daily
Hi-Vite Drops 2x daily
Deworming 0.5ml today and then again in 2 weeks. for hook worms
they also sold us Feline Urgent care a/d canned food (she scarfed it so I bought it).

Re Check in 2 weeks and hopefully treat for tape worms. (By weight again).

I will make that appt with the Dr. who is not afraid to touch cat parts without gloves and who understands me when I speak.

So I will do all the Doc said to and I will pray for her as well.

DH won out on the name she is Maggie (DH said it is Cute for Maggot) Please no offense if you are or have a Maggie.

So Maggie is in Chicken Hospital at my house for as long as it takes to treat the tape worm because I am not wanting to do that for the other 4 Ladies who live here.
Now Maggie (the punk) moved in and is currantly a 120.00 special needs, sickly Kitten.

God Bless America
and Husbands who love their wives.

Well, congrats that you've got a survivor!!!
I'm glad you're going to be able to help her; the worst thing for me is not being able to do anything. (SMH and beginning to
hit.gif
)
Maggie seems like an appropriate (although slightly "yucky") name.
hu.gif

And amen to the last two lines!
hugs.gif

After everything I put her through yesterday with the de-maggoting bathing and blow drying the combing with my eyebrow comb (couldn't find the flea or lice comb) The handling the eye drops face washes with wash cloth ...

She is either a fighter who wants to live
highfive.gif
or Brain damaged. (if this is the case she will fit right in here
highfive.gif
)

On the funny farm where life is beautiful all the time and the animals run to see what nonsense the Crazy Lady is up to now.

yippiechickie.gif

I know that song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But I can't make it go here.

I feel this one and I'm so discreet that almost no one knows that I'm udder-feeding.

Vet said 2 weeks this is the thing we will use does the fleas too.

It's growing on me probably more so when I can think about eating again.

A name like Maggie would make it take longer for me to be able to eat.....
