Hairy vetch is a winter hardy, annual legume. It is one of the best nitrogen-fixers and is reported to be more efficient at nitrogen fixation than peas. This makes it useful in vegetable crop rotations. Since it is slow to establish, it is usually sown with a nurse crop. Once established, it is good at weed suppression and soil conditioning.
Land preparation
Prepare a well-drained seedbed free of weeds and clumps of soil. Hairy vetch performs poorly on compacted soils.
It has high phosphorus and potassium requirements. Test soil for available phosphorus 40 lb/ac and potassium 120 lb/ac.
Hairy vetch will tolerate a wide range of pH.
Seeding rate
Drill 15-20 lb/ac. Drilling is preferred for uniformity.
Broadcast 25-40 lb/ac.
When seeding with a winter rye nurse crop, sow 20-30 lb/ac hairy vetch and 70 lb/ac winter rye.
When seeding with an oats nurse crop in late summer, sow 40 lb/ac vetch and 80 lb/ac oats.
Since it is a legume, it can cause problems though. Soy is a legume and is toxic at high levels. Hay made from fields with vetch and hurt horses and cattle but is ok in small amounts.I am so glad.... I learn something new every day....
For what its worth though Loco weed is a legume as well. So is Messquite and plants that look like mesquite.... not all of them have edible pods. Though not dangerous to people the non edible kinds just act like a laxative.
This is why its so important to understand and identify plants on your property especially if you did not plant them. I lumped them all into the dangerous category....

No need for anyone to reply, sitting here crying and I just needed to vent.
This day just totally stinks on so many different levels.
Still recovering from first "bug" I've picked up since being dxd w//CML over 8 years ago. Unfortunately I first shared it with the DH who is now soundly asleep after insisting on going to town with me this morning. A trip we knew was coming, I just didn't expect to have to make it so soon. We left with a pet carrier filled with the most loving, gentle creature anyone would ever want the blessing to know and we only brought the carrier back home. There was nothing left that could be done for her Feline Lymphoma and the past few days had told me that her quality of life was rapidly slipping away and after talking with my wonderful vet, I was forced to choose to do the hard thing, the heartbreaking thing, the loving thing, the right thing. Why is it the right thing is the one that always seems to be the most painful?
Anyway, Thanks for listening.
Now I have to get moving and start the stock for the chicken soup that my poor DH is going to be in serious need of very soon.
