until our broody momma hens eggs hatch!

cooouple questions,

this be our first broody,

I want to let her raise the chicks, cause she's worked so hard for this, she had to fly over a 10 foot tall fence every day for 12 days(shes only got 8 eggs, we took a few to lighten her load), then seit there for 3 weeks..she deserves it.


as soon as the chicks can walk, is it safe to put her back in with the other chickens??

theres not enough room to leave them in the feed room for 6 weeks until the chicks are on thier own. and we don't want them running the yard with hawks and our cats and dogs.

will she keep the babies away from the others???, I won't want them killed.

There are different methods. Some keep them with the rest, some put them in their own quarters. If you know you have pred problems, their own place is often the best for at least the first few weeks.

we don't really have ALOT of predators,we do have hawks, but with the loud mouth geese, they never try anything.

we have two outdoor dogs that I KNOW would love to munch on chickies and momma.


in the pen they are safe, from everthing but the other chooks, if they'd bother them
