size of sandbox?

I'll put a sandbox at the end of my run if that'll make my girls happy....

question is, how big should it be? If you could give me an idea of what dimensions it should be I'll appreciate that! My run is 3 feet wide. Thanks!

Basically you want it large enough for at least one bird tolay down and roll a bit. I'd say at least 2x2, bigger would allow a couple of girls to use it at the same time. I've yet to make my own sand box, but the hens love to find dirt in the yard or garden to roll around a bit in!

And you would just buy playsand for this? Or get dirt outta the yard and throw it in?

Mine is pretty big, maybe 4'x6'. Right now I have 8 chickens and just about all of them get in there together. It's so funny watching them scratch around together. I have 8 more babies to join the big girls soon. You will want to use construction sand in your box, not the white play sand. I also throw my grit in with the sand every once in a while.
