sizzle, frizzle, and frazzle???

Question , i hope i am in the right place , since silkies only come in a small size , and not standard size like silkies in Europe , but not yet in the US, SO i love the look of a white silkie but I want standard size birds, so how would any one begin to create a larger silkie ...???

Just a normal silkie in larger size? (not frizzled, i mean?) did you try posting on the regular silkie thread? This one doesn't seem to get much activity. I got rid of my silkies, so i dropped out of the big silkie thread, but you may ask there too.

I would expect you could crossbreed to large fowl cochins, then back to the silkie genetics, but that's an uneducated guess. I sure have had a hard time getting rid of silkie genes in some of my cochins though! Lol

wow hey thanks for your help, thats so nice of you ,i was thinking of going to the large fowl cochins could be the way to go, thanks for that helpand thanks for letting me know about the big silkie thread,im not sure were the big silkie thread would be..? i have some problems navigating this site at times but your info was a great start for me ..!! thanks sooo sooo much

i have a mixed genetics thread in my list somewhere too, if i can find it, some of those folks might be able to help with which genes are dominant, etc and would cross back easiest.

Does anyone have any pictures of what a smooth silkie would look like as a chick?

I'm trying to figure out what a bird like this would look like as a baby chick (not my chicken, just a googled image). Also, how old would the chicks be when you can figure out the difference between the silkies, sizzles, smooth silkies, and frizzled silkies (frilkies?). Thanks!

I have a Roo that looks very similar to that one, although he is more of a blonde color (we call him Blondie, a name that stuck from when he was still a she...he just crowed last weekend for the first time, it was more of a squeak-a-doodle...praying the others are still girls!)

Of note: We've had them about 6 weeks, so he may be younger than the bird in your picture. He had flat feathering on his wings as a chick, and a pretty design in them. The rest was fluff.

In the first photo it looks like he has black curly tips, thats misleading, its just a frizzled sizzle behind him! The two images below that give a better view of his wings, he is on the far left.

The lady we got him from breeds silkies & sizzles, of both the smooth and frizzled (curly) varieties. Blondie here is a smooth sizzle (not a real breed, yes, but she's in her 20th generation or something and well on her way to making them true breeding).

The photos below show him as he has grown up (with a few of his silkie & sizzle pals). I expect he will only get floofier from here!

Blondie is SO cute! So funny, I asked that question in April. But your timing couldn't be better. I just hatched out my silkie chicks, they're not even a week old yet. You're pictures are super helpful! Actually the breeder I got my eggs from is also on F20. Are your chicks by any chance from Sheri Minkner? Here's a pic of one of my chicks that I think based off of your pictures will be a smooth frizzle. Not the color I expected to come through, I thought he was a paint based off of his skin coloring. Can't wait to see what color he is and how he feathers out! (And if he's actually a he.)

Hilarious, they are totally from the same farm. Sheri is so sweet but oh my goodness that place is chicken-tastic! Even while at her farm I could barely tell the girls from the boys when fully grown as she pointed them out, so i sure hope i can figure it out in mine ha.

That is hilariously good timing too! I just saw the post while trying to learn more about frazzles and said hey, i know that face...one of my girls I got at the same time as Blondie is super small and has had a heck of a time getting her feathers.

Harley has some bald chicky-armpits and sooo many pin feathers when the others are losing theirs & looking like good, fluffy little teens. She was supposed to be a Frizzled Silkie... Praying she isn't an accidental frazzle...

I digress...lol, it sure looks like your chick & blondie have the same coloring! Keep me posted, I think Blondie may just have been a bit older so it makes sense. His coloring is a bit of a blonde-paint to me, he has highlights all over.

We're patiently waiting for the others to develop. Since Blondie turned into such a crowing testosterone fueled Dom so quickly I hope it doesn't slow the others from letting us know if they're a roo too! We really only want one :/

Do you have pics of Harley? Are her feathers brittle? How curly is she?There are lots of other genes that can cause a reduced number of feathers or slower growth of feathers too. I can’t imagine someone as experienced as Sheri would have an accidental Frazzle. But she did mention there’s a Frizzle modifying gene that can hide a Frizzle and make it look Smooth.That bred to a Frizzle can cause what she calls a woolie.
