I have not yet tried the new product Vetracyin(sp) but it is suppose to be great stuff. I have always used Nitrafurazone on wounds like that with great success. I would put her on an antibiotic like pencillian and keep her coated with a wound dressing. She looks like a trooper and should pull through just fine as long as bugs and infection don't set in.

I she a Speckled Sussex? I love those guys so much spunk!

I personally think if you are willing to put in the time and love she could heal and pull through. I am sure that you have already done something but I have had an issue with a hawk attack and these are some of the steps I took.

I used a large syringe (without the needle) and did a Peroxide and water flush, then rinse and do a Betadine & water flush, then rinse. Antibiotic ointment is a must. Penicillan will also help. You can get it in injectable form and as long as you aren't squeemish to injecting it will be the best way to get it into her.

At the E. Vet we dont use hygrogen peroxide on open wounds. It eats away at the good tissue as well as the bad, and can prolong healing. We use povodone iodine diluted to look like very weak tea, or VERY dilute clorhexidine. If not diluted enough the chlorhexidine does basically the same as the peroxide and can be harmeful to wounds.

I only used it once to get any debris out. After that I just kept it clean and used ointment. I know that it can inhibite new skin growth and be a bit painful to use it beyond that. In this scenerio vet was out of the question but I needed to get all the debris out and that was all I had. That is something to know for the future or to have on hand if needed (hopefully never again)!

I would try to save her. I had a peafowl chick that was missing the skin off one leg and it's side. The poor thing looked bad and set around in shock for about a day. I used granulex and keep gauze on the wound to keep it clean. She healed up and looked perfectly fine in about three weeks.

Ok here's my take.....I've doctored lotsa birds and she can definantly pull through.....let her rest bring her out of shock basically as you are apply a topical of some sort then u have a desicion a: you can cut the feathered skin off or. B: fold it back over and hope it regrows. Id personally remove it. It will form a big scab basically if you do as long as you keep it clean and keep her ina clean environment it will heal. The main thing is after the shock wears off and the scab forms don't mess with her tooooo much. People kill birds by tryin to help and end up doing more harm than good. As for a topical something like neosporin would even work. She doesn't look to be bleeding like crazy so she she has a good chance clean water is a must also obviously. There are threads on here for the proper water to aspirin mixtures for pain relief also. Good luck I hope she pulls through.

well its 7,45am here and she's bright, alert and wanting food

thats always a good sign. the wound seems to have dried out a bit over night which concerns me, i think being in a room with those heat lamps did it..... just about to send the kids off to school then im gonna give chicken a wash and clip away some neck feathers that have stuck on the wound (ewwwwwww) i thought i clipped enough away but obviously not.

i really appreciate all the advice and support people are giving, and many thanks for all the pm's too

That's horrible! I've had a Turken's neck cut open before, but nothing THAT bad. . . I'm glad to hear she's making improvements.

So sorry she and you had to go through this
