Do you have a health department? Do you have a fish and game department? Your animal control are a bunch of idiots and don't realize the seriousness of what this could involve. I've never in my long life heard of a county animal agency that doesn't keep careful records of rabies incidents.

You shouldn't accept this. It's not right.

Your skunk being found dead at the site of the attack is not normal. It points to, no, it screams RABIES.

The idiot you talked to on the phone was WRONG, this skunk needs to be tested!!!
Wrap it in plastic and refrigerate, don't freeze it, and call ASAP in the morning; your veterinarian, your DNR, the state veterinary path lab; just keep at it until it's resolved.

I suppose you could call it resolved. Haven't had any more skunks around but still can't say for a fact what made the skunk into a good skunk

While there is a very good chance the skunk had rabies, they tend to carry rabies, I do not think the skunk died of rabies if it looked fairly healthy. As to why it died, that is a question.

I don't think the chicken did it, might have been the goose. This is when one wishes for the camera.
