Slaughter cone alternative?

I got him from Tuffoldhen and he was a slunger!!! I'd never seen a rooster that big in my life! Unfortunately, he was too big for my hens and was hurting them from his sheer weight. I had hens with nerve damage to their wings after his matings and he was getting rougher and meaner.

We finally had to process him and found out why he was so aggressive...his testes were almost the size of a human's~bigger than golf balls! I'd never seen such big testes in a roo in my life and I've butchered many, many chickens over the years.

His offspring had the same problems....enlarged testes and increased aggression.

OK, what's a slunger?

Did you see my post with the photos of huge rooster testes? I'll see if I can find it, to link. It's not at all unusual for my 20 week-plus roos to be equipped like that. I don't think it's an abnormality, I think it's just what happens when you have really healthy, well nourished roos. But it does explain why they get so aggressive with the hens, and get to be such a PITA that I have no choice but to put them on death row.

They sure taste good!

Here's the link, it's post #7 on that page. The ruler's fuzzy in the pic, but if you look close you can tell which side is inches, and which is cm's, and see the marks to get an idea just how big they are. Almost 3 inches, on the biggest ones.

A slunger~pronounced to rhyme with plunger~ in hillbilly-ese, is a very large thing...as in a slunger of a bass, that buck was a real slunger, etc.

I have no idea from whence the expression comes, but it has always been a part of our vernacular.

I saw those pics on another thread. They are one of the parts of the bird offal that my dogs just will NOT eat...which is strange. They usually only turn down the intestines.

"Slunger" didn't make as far as KY, or at any rate, I've never heard it before! I grew up in Oklahoma, never heard it there, either. It must be a local term. It would be interesting to find out the origin.

My mom had weird sayings that I never heard from anybody else, I can't tell them here, I'd get edited or deleted. Maybe she just made them up as she went along, who knows!

Next time I butcher a monster roo, I'll get a pic. It'll be awhile, gotta hatch and grow 'em, first.

Thanks all for the suggestions and the photo! I ended up having a big 4th of July party, slaughtered some chickens, and roasted them over the fire pit, then some fireworks with the neighbors/block. It was GREAT! We ended up using some gallon juice jugs that worked quite well
