And get a thermometer to control the actual temperature. This is even more important with a small metal brooder where they will not be able to withdraw far enough.
 
It is plastic not metal. Also I watch them for quite a bit of time and have never seen them eating the pine shavings, just digging with their feet
 
I don't have a clear answer for this, but I did have a sleepy chick at 3 days who ended up being just fine! I got them via mail so I think it was just hard on her. Got some vitamin supplements from the store and gave her a little smashed/cooked egg. Took a few days but she is now 8 weeks and doing great!
