Sleepy Chickens

Is it common for chickens to be really sleepy after dark? I can literally pat them when they are sleeping and they don't even flinch.

Yes, not only "common" but totally normal to chickens. It's one reason chickens roost at night, to be safer up high. People often use the night time to clip wings, to band their chickens, and to introduce other chickens to the flock or slide chicks under broody hens.
