Slipped Tendon

I ordered 7 chicks from Ideal Poultry and received 20, 13 males. One pullet wasn’t really running around with the others so I separated her. I made the wrong decision and put another pullet with her for company. The pullet wouldn’t walk and just sat there, like she was asleep but she was awake.

Both died within 40 minutes to an hour of each other today and I received them Thursday. Now one of the male’s foot is swollen. I remember noticing that in the sitting chick.

I’m worried this may be a virus. It doesn’t look like a slipped tendon, splayed legs, or the tremors. Appears to be the left one if you’re looking at the picture but it’s his right foot.

Any ideas?

I gave him a mini epsom salt soak. He can’t/won’t put pressure on the foot.

I think you may be dealing with shipping stress. Sometimes I wonder how chicks survive the mail. Many get dehydrated, cold, roughed, snd pasty butt. I give all chicks a couple of drops Poultry Cell as soon as they get here, then dip their beaks into water a few times and into feed. Save AChick electrolytes with vitamins in the water is also good to use instead for a couple of days.

The swelling does not look that bad in pictures, but keep an eye on it. More likely they have injured the foot on bedding, or the leg is injured. As for slipped tendon and other leg bone deformities, look for one leg out to the side or twisted, and note if their is redness or swelling on the hock. Make sure your surface is non-slip.

There is redness there and the foot. I have pine shavings. I just have them Sav-A-Chick today.

He seems to be breathing heavily. I’m concerned because the one pullet was fine - eating and drinking, walking around and everything normally and then I go to check up on them and she’s dead.

They sometimes ship those little cockerels to help keep the others warm when you get a small order. Otherwise they may have had to cull them. If you can, you may want to advertise the healthy boys on Craigslist for someone who may want them.

I would check them all for pasty butt once a day to make sure they are pooping. You still could lose more, but I really hope that you can save them now.

I looked into it and I think his hip? joint tendon slipped, rather than the hock one. I read another thread that recommended rolling the joint and to see if you can feel a click. Didn’t feel it in the hock, so I tried the next joint up and felt a click. It seems to have helped him a little.
