1/2 X 1/2 For The Floor Absolutely! The 1/4 Inch Stuff Is Too Small And They Might As Well Be On Plywood If Thats The Case....
The Size Of My Jumbos--- I Cant Really Say. I Havent Weighed Any In Quite A While.... I Have Been Doing Quail For A Long Time And Have Developed A Good Sight Reference--- I Just Notice The Really Big Birds In The Crowd And Those Are The Ones That Go Into The Breeder Banks Around Here. Spare Smaller Hens Usually Get Sold. All Spare Roos Are Eaten. After Size Qualifies Them Then I Set Preference On Colors And Individual Markings That Strike My Fancy...
As For The Great A&m Debate--- Imo--- The True Texas A&m Coturnix Quail Are Either A Myth, Or Have Been Diluted To Their Natural State--english White. I Do Beleive The University Made Them Way Back When.... But In All My Years Of Quail I Have Never Seen A White Meat Coturnix Dispite All The Claims. Was That Really What They Were? Or Was That A Marketing Ploy To Sell The New Strain? I Dunno. But So Many People Learn White With A Spot= A&m That Now Even If They Do Exist Buying Them Is A Never Ending Crap Shoot Because Most Folks Think White= A&m, When In Fact It Does Not. White = Albino If The EyEs Are Pink (lack Of All Pigmentation) Or English Whites. The Legend States That The A&m Was A Very Large Bird--- Reaching Upwards Of A Pound, Minimum Was Near 14 Oz.... It Also States They Were All White Meat And Tasted Better Than Any Other Coturnix. Instead Of The Great White Whale.... We Are In Search Of The Great White Quail!
Make No Mistake There Are Some Hefty White Birds Around..... I Have Purchased More Than A Few Myself, But All Cooked Up The Same As All The Rest Of The Coturnix I Have Eaten. Were They A&m's? Were They Really Fat Whites? I Cant Say. Deerman Has Been Into Coturnix Since Jesus Was In Diapers--- He May Be Able To Shed Better Light On This For Ya?
Me I'm More Into Bobs And Pheasants.... I Like Coturnix As They Are The Roaches Of The Quail World. But Side By Side Taste With Bobs And There's No Question Which Is Better. So While Y'all Are Chasing That Great White Quail.... I'll Slowly Be Trying To Breed My Butlers Up To The 5 Pound Mark! (just Kidding About The 5) I Am Working To Get My Bird Lines As Big As Possible ( I ENVISION THE DAY WHEN QUAIL DINNER WILL MEAN EAT TIL YOU CANT BREATHE, AND HAVE THE LEFT OVERS FOR LUNCH TOMARROW- ALL OFF OF 1 BIRD!
). And It Takes An Incredible Amount Of Effort, Time, And Money. Because Not Many Birds Grow Up To Be "whoppers" So You End Up Buying Eggs, Hatching Them And Raising Them Only To Be Disappointed As Usual.... This Requires Alot Of Culling To Acquire And Maintain A Seriously Selective Breeding Program.
