Slow Night Here In Quailville

If you could only send just a little bit of that warm stuff my way? Seems the older I get, the colder the winters get...lol. I'm thinking I need to head further south?

Do you know of any advantage of a coturnix roo x bobwhite hen cross? I saw in another thread it is possible but the offspring would be sterile. Would the cross produce a faster maturing, better egg laying, or less skittish bird? Just thought I would ask your opinion on what would be gained in the cross, if anything?

1ST--- THAT WHOLE MOVE FARTHER SOUTH THING.... I THINK THATS CALLED "MIGRATION"-------- LOL

2ND--- THE "BOB BIRD" IS A HIGHBRID OF COTURNIX AND BOB WHITE (PURISTS CALL IT A FREAK OF NATURE) IT WAS DONE FOR 2 REASONS--- DEPENDING ON WHICH SIDE OF THE FENCE YOUR ON... FROM THE COTURNIX SIDE--- BETTER TASTING/ FROM THE BOB SIDE--- A FASTER MATURING BIRD. SOME FOLKS HAVE CREATED THEM AND TRIED TO MARKET THEM BOTH WAYS AS WELL AS A "TRAINING AID" FOR DOG TRAINERS(WHICH THEY FAIL MISERABLY AT...) ***FROM ALL THE RESEARCH I HAVE SEEN***===THEY ARE NOT STERILE, THO FERTILITY ISNT GREAT. THEY ARE NOT GREAT FLIERS AS BOBS OR AS SPASTIC AS BOBS(THUS THEY DONT WORK FOR THE DOG TRAINERS...), BUT MORE SPASTIC THAN COTURNIX. THE SIZE IS NO REAL CHANGE. TASTE I HAVE NO IDEA? THEY ARE SLOW MATURING --- FULL SIZE 16-18 WKS- NOT MUCH BETTER THAN BOBS, AND WORSE THAN COTURNIX. BASICALLY ITS A COMPROMISE AT BEST. THE PURISTS AND DOG TRAINERS OF THE WORLD SAY "WHY BOTHER?" AND IT HASNT CAUGHT ON WITH COTURNIX FOLKS YET EITHER BECAUSE IT MATURES SLOWER. I HAVE NO IDEA OF THE EGG PRODUCTION CAPABILITY BUT AS THE REST OF THE DEAL IS A 50-50 COMPROMISE I WOULD TEND TO EXPECT A LESSER EGG PRODUCTION RATE THAN STANDARD COTURNIX. TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE LOWER LAYING RATE OF MOMMA(BOB WHITE HEN) AND THAT MEANS A SLOWER PRODUCTION RATE OF BOB BIRDS TO START WITH. I PERSONALLY THINK ITS PROBABLY A NEAT LOOKING ODDITY, BUT NOT MUCH MORE THAN THAT. THE PURISTS WILL STICK TO THEIR BOBS AND THE QUANTITY FOLKS WILL GO WITH COTURNIX--- SO WHERE DOES THAT LEAVE THE BOB BIRD?

IF YOU HAVE AN INTEREST IN CHECKING THEM OUT FURTHER VEGA FARMS WAS TRYING TO MARKET THEM ON HERE--- DO A USER SEARCH AND SEND THEM A PM...

Btw--- How Are Those Butlers Doin' For Ya? They Ought To Be Getting Decent Size By Now... Tho They Will Continue To Grow Very Very Slowly Over The Next Yr And Half Or So...

Yea it is...it was MINUS TWENTY today for gods sake! Florida people would die in that temp!! My DH who grew up in Rockledge moved us here, and griped all summer about how hot it was, is wrapped up in a blanket right now!

I only ended up with 3 Butlers and 20 Northern Giants. When I pinioned, I did the Butlers on one side and the Northerns on the opposite side. Guess maybe I should have marked the Butlers with some zip ties or something cause I am not sure which 3 they are now unless I start looking...LOLOL. They are getting bigger...mean, lean, eatin' machines. They seem to love getting into some suet cakes, wheat scratch or whatever veggie/fruit scraps I happen to toss their way. They are kind of spazzy but I just love the noises they make. I sure can tell male from female now by their faces. The coturnix lay like crazy but I am thinking I will be offing them as soon as it gets above freezing and just keep these Bobs. They are still inside hubby's machine shop, which is not heated, but they escaped the -30 below windchill stuff we just had. Been dreaming of Slatebelts...lololol. Seriously though, perhaps in the spring, I might see if you might have some Butler eggs available. I will have to see what sex the 3 Butlers I have are; thinking I am a Butler fan.

MINUS 20 IS A WEE BIT BRISK.... BUT I DONT MIND. I AM AN AVID OUTDOORSMAN, HUNTER, FLYFISHER---- I CANT ENJOY ANY OF THAT HERE IN THIS OPPRESSIVE HEAT AND HUMIDITY! I LONG FOR THE DAY WHEN MY YOUNGEST IS 18 AND I CAN PACK UP AND HAULL BUGGY NORTH! IF THERE'S 1 THING I HAVE LEARNED IN THIS HEAT---- IN THE COLD YOU CAN ALWAYS GO INSIDE THE HOUSE AND PUT MORE CLOTHES ON....... BUT HERE IN THE HEAT YOU CAN ONLY GET SO NAKED.....

I Get The "butler Fan" Thing..... I Am Hooked. Mine Are A Lil Less Spastic Than Any Other Bobs I Have Or Have Had In The Past--- Too Big And Fat To Freak Out--- It Just Takes Too Much Energy For These Fat Boyz! But I Have To Be Careful Because What They Lack In Freaking Out They Make Up For In Stand And Fight---- Like Getting Biten By A 1 Liter Pop Bottle Sized Turtle With Feathers! 1 Of My Big Boyz Latches On To You And He Can "bring You To Jesus!" Lol

Dont Get Me Wrong.... I Still Love My Coturnix, They're Amazing Lil Laying Machines. I'm Still Getting Between 2 And 3 Doz Eggs A Day From Them! I Have 7 Batches Of Eggs Set That Range From 80+ To 100+ About 4 To 6 Days Apart In The Bators, And 3 Different Broods In Brooders--- They Breed Like Rabbits And Roaches

For Meat And Egg Production You Really Cant Beat The Lil Fellas. Too Bad They Dont Taste Like Or Reach The "sumo Wrestler" Proportions My Butlers Do....

So, JJ, how big do your jumbos get? Have you weighed any recently? I was stuck on getting A&M's but Sam says no one breeds like they used to. I want to try Mamawolfs a&m's. Also, do you raise in 1/4x1/4 wire mesh or 1/2x1/2 inch? Someone is trying to tell me that you need bigger wire than that for proper poop clearance.
