Slow Night Here In Quailville

It turned out to be rats.

On another topic: I had a chicken go missing & today 2 bitties showed up then moma & 2 more bitties come along. I found her nest & took her last 3 eggs, 4 bitties, & moma to the coop to build a fine nest/brooding house for them. She had to tidy up a bit when she got there but she seemed very happy with the arrangements.

Well, I had my first hatching of buttons come off last night, I moved them to the brooder this morning. They are so tiny!! There are several different colors. I haven't done much research on buttons, I have no idea what color they will be.I guess I could ask the seller but its fun to see them change and be surprised. I moved the bobwhites out to a larger brooder. I just thought the coturnix were wild. I've got a few coturnix eggs in the incubator, the first of my own to go in.

Well, a coon killed a guinea and got away, and now I can't go back to sleep, so thought I'd do an update on my quail. I got a three hole cage and about 25 quail from a friend to add to my bunch. I had several pens with one roo and one hen and put a few more hens in each of them. Problem was I wasn't watching too close and had a roo mixed in with the hens and got him in with one of my roos, so now I have a roo in the hospital cage. Second day and I still got a fair number of eggs, I'm waiting for the dry up. I've got about 40 of my own eggs in the incubator and some young XLD ready to go to an outside brooder.

I Get It.... I Have Alot Of Young Birds In Grow Out Pens And Quite A Few That Have Grown Out That Need To Be Set Into Groups. I Have All But Stopped Setting Coturnix Eggs For The Last Few Weeks Now That It Is Pheasant Season And The Butlers Are Laying I Need The Bator Space For Them. I Currently Have A Barn And House Full Of Brooders

Most Of Which Have Pheasant Chicks In Them.... Almost Every Chicken Hen I Have Is Merrily Sitting And Cooking Their Own Eggs (market Really Dropped On Chicken Eggs This Year At Tax Time... So Rather Than Waste Them I Let The Girls Do What Comes Naturally)

I think this thread needs to be resurrected. Besides, I just want to ramble a little, and don't think it needs a whole thread by itself.

I have offically gotten myself in trouble. I have hatched more quail that I have room to brood. I have got to throw together some kind of emergency growout pen. I had a batch in the playpen, half of which are now merrily living on the floor. I told my husband "just don't go in there". I have critical mass on chickens, and the poults need somewhere to go too. The Barn is late being completed and planned moves are running behind, throwing my entire pen arrangements/scheduling out of whack.

I have lost quite a few out of my breeding pens lately, to various causes, the last of which was a snake, which I did not find. I have to get some bird netting around the pen to see if I can catch it, and find where he came in to get it patched. I think it must be under the roof tin. The problem now is, I have pens with only a couple of hens and don't want to waste the space, but I am afraid to try to add extra hens. I was thinking about scrambling the whole mess in a big pen with the new hens, then sorting them back out into the breeding pens. I certainly am not worried if they quit laying for a while it will be a blessing at this time.

I also thought about just processing the whole bunch of them and starting over with the youngsters. Just thinking, and that could be dangerous.

Yeah, they're very good scrambled.............but............tearing through the membrane after cracking them to get everything out that you wanna cook............is kinda like trying to break open a safe!!! Dedgum, by the time you've gotten 15 or 20 so cracked open to get the goods out, the urge to do the cookin' is 'bout over.
