SLW has swollen area under waddles

Medicine giving went better today!

Question: Baytril 22.7mg/ml is what I am giving her. I give her .45ml twice a day. She is not laying eggs yet (29 or so weeks old). After we are done with medication and she still is not laying, when is it safe to consume her eggs should she start to lay shortly after? She looks about ready compared to our other SLW. Her waddle is bigger and redder.

I didn't even think to ask, but I'm taking her back Thursday for a re-check so I will ask him. Thank you.

You're a great chicken mommy! Fingers crossed for your girl to get better and start laying soon!

Thanks! I've always been called Dog Mamma (we have 5), now I need to add Chicken Mamma to that. I need to capture a video of them running towards me when they are at the back fence. It is so funny.

My daughter used to practice vet medicine in Reno, both large and small animals in 2 different practices. She knows hardly anything about chickens though. Baytril is very good, probably the best antibiotic for chickens. In giving medicine to chickens, I usually sit them on my lap with a towel, and with the arm I am holding them pull down on the wattles, put a 1/4 ml in and release the wattles for them to swallow, and repeat. With small pills you can put them in the back, and they will almost always swallow them, unlike my dogs and cats.

Yes, those are great pics. Either we have gotten better at it or she is more tolerant of it! My husband holds her and I do the giving.

Glad I'm going back to the vet tomorrow. Her lump hasn't gone down, although it hasn't gotten bigger either. It is still hard. I would think if it was an infection, it would be going down by now. She is eating, drinking, and acting like a chicken though. Can chickens get cancer?? Not sure why she still has a hard lump. It's about the size of a marble. More to her right side than in the middle.
