Today one of our hens layed a tiny egg. I know this happens to pullets, but this is a three year old hen. She hasn't been laying for a while, but it doesn't apperar to be a molt. According to my DS, this egg has a strong odor. The egg is very speckled--we get speckled eggs all the time, but this one was paticuarly heavily speckled. This isn't a sign of a health condition, is it?

Like marble sized? If so, it's just a glitch and they are called fart eggs. In 3 1/2 years of having chickens, I've only had 1 fart egg.
I had an orpington that layed a fart egg about once a month. The crazy part was she normally laid xtra large eggs and would still complain about the tiny ones.

I had about the same thing yesterday. Our hens are 8 months and have been laying regularly for 3 months. They're pretty much all "large" sized, but I found this one: I called our take for yesterday 4 and a half, LOL

LOL, I would think so..biology isn't perfect so you have to eggspect an abberation once in a while. As long as your birds are otherwise healthy and don't do this all the time, everything should be just fine. Consider it an extra smile in your day...I did.

I get those small eggs occassionally, the hens usually lay normally afterwards though so don't worry.
