hi, what would be better for my chickens large flake or small flake pine shavings.

I use the large flakes to help prevent a dusty coop.

Both can become dusty but the large ones break down slower....because they are larger.

I've always used large flake and it works fine for both chicks and full grown chickens.

We are new to keeping chickens..

When we purchased our baby chicks last march I purchased the large pine flakes. I was worried the baby chicks would eat the small flakes... Not sure if that is a thing but that is what we did. We purchased two bundles so we still have a lot left

I am planning to switch to small flakes so they will break down faster as we are using the deep litter method and planning on composting all of the litter/manure for our garden.

I suppose I will be watching this thread. Planning on emptying the coop soon so I will need to decide what to buy next.

Large, because it makes it less likely that the chickens eat it.

I prefer the large but I use both and the chickens don’t care.
I have started using shredded packing paper and they are fine with that too.
I only use shavings or shredded paper in the nest boxes. On the floor it is all leaves.
