Hi BYC! I've noticed lately that there are small holes in my yard, dug in the dirt but against a concrete walk. They're about a half inch in diameter and quite deep - I stuck a piece of straw in one to see. I filled them up but they were back again this morning. What kind of animal would make a hole so small but so fast? Thanks! I can upload pictures if needed.

Here's one. You can see it's against the concrete.

And here's Rose demonstrating the brick as a size reference for you. :)
I have five gals altogether - approximate ages 2, 2, 2, 1, and 8 months-ish.

Its probably an insect of some sort.... Wasps There is no pile of dirt around it so I am thinking its not a mousie.... some spiders dig holes too but they usually cover it up with a web lid covered in dirt for camouflage...

Where are you located... I am in the desert and there are several other things that can do holes like that...

Here is where a geographical a location in your profile would be of great help. Were that my yard I would say either a lizard(5 and 7 lined skinks) or more likely a ground squirrel(think chipmunk) they love to be next to the concrete walkways.
@Dawnclucks22 hrm, too small of a hole for the ground squirrel those are usually 1 inch holes

Never thought about it being insects. Could be!

Around here Yellow Jackets sometimes have their nests in "flat ground" but most of the time they dig out along a bank, but we have a lot of rain too.

Oh - I wonder if it could be a toad?

@Dawnclucks22 do you have a camera, gopro, etc. that you could set up and record for several hours to see what comes out:)
