Small holes in dirt?

Its probably an insect of some sort.... Wasps There is no pile of dirt around it so I am thinking its not a mousie.... some spiders dig holes too but they usually cover it up with a web lid covered in dirt for camouflage...

Where are you located... I am in the desert and there are several other things that can do holes like that...

I live in Southern California. Not many squirrels or chipmunks around here :)

Never thought about it being insects. Could be!

Around here Yellow Jackets sometimes have their nests in "flat ground" but most of the time they dig out along a bank, but we have a lot of rain too.

Oh - I wonder if it could be a toad?

@Dawnclucks22 do you have a camera, gopro, etc. that you could set up and record for several hours to see what comes out:)
Hm... I don't have much I could set up but I could probably find something quiet to do out there for several hours.

Well if you have skinks I'm uploading a shot with a penny in it. There are 2 different Skink holes there.

besides ground squirrels make holes and warrens. I had one dig out my back patio in my other house... Concrete broke up...

Now that I know your location its probably a female tarantula.... Not dangerous... Here in San Diego when I used to ride my horse out in the back country I would see them... I stopped and looked around and there was a Tarantula about every twenty feet or so ....

That would be very cool to see!
Nope - no Tarantulas here, but if we had them, I would probably pester them to death.

I was pestering one out in the front yard when I was about sixteen... Just gently redirecting its travel so I could see it better... Mom called out from the kitchen... Be Careful Tarantulas can jump about three feet... she went on doing dishes.... Dont know if its true but I stopped messing with it after that.... LOL.
