smallest breed of duck???

400

I have a female wood duck who is 5 months old in this pic. Ive had her since a day old and she is only as big as my two week old Pekin ducklings. Not sure if you can have a runt duck but Id think she should be done growing by now. I know wood ducks only get to be around 1.5 lbs but she is very tiny. She has always had the appropriate diet and she usually roams our big yard freely (wings are clipped) but she is absolutely the best duck. Very affectionate, smart and follows you around like a dog. I wish I had more! Does anyone know when wood ducks are done growing or why my little one is so exceptionally small?

Welcome to BYC also you can go and hang out in the Ornamental thread it's 2nd down from duck thread.

Wood ducks, mandarins, or teal if you want cuteness as ducklings and beauty as adults.

But i would recommend call ducks if you looking for over all cuteness for the whole life span.

If you want small ducks that will stay in the yard and are friendly, get some call ducks as babies and handle them daily.

I have over 30 call ducks and they free range. They never fly further than from my house to the duck coop (when I am out there with food and they want treats). Mine are trained to go in on their own at night too.

If you want really small ones, get them from a breeder with proven flocks. Some people cross them with mallards or other ducks and you get bigger call ducks. Or poor quality calls can be on the bigger side as well.

Silkie calls are rare. I have 2 pairs. I didn't handle them much so they are very timid and afraid of me.
