I have 4 cats in my household. The male seems to have a serious gas problem. The others do not have that problem. Could changing the food brand help with this? I have been kind of hesitant on changing the food because of the recent problems with corn and wheat gluten. The smell is sometimes stifling and I want to keep the cat so I need to figure something out.

I think sometimes its just that the animal has a more delicate tummy. We have alot of dogs and cats and we feed them all the same foods and ours vary with how their systems process it. If you have just one, maybe the vet can give you a remedy

If it's the Meow Mix I am thinking of, it's got alot of different flavors/ingredients in it. Perhaps one of those ingredients is not agreeing with him. Try plain ol' Purina cat chow or if you have a walmart near by, try a food called Maximum Nutrition. It was the only thing my siamese Bekka could eat without GI trouble. Also, (this is kinda hard to ask) but are you sure that smell is coming from where you think it's coming from? Male cats, esp. male house cats that are fixed, have a tendency to a urinary disorder/blockage that leaves a strong smell too. Good luck!

Ok, not trying to hijack the topic, but did anybody besides me think of Phoebe from "Friends" singing her smelly cat song? Sorry, couldn't help myself.

Now back to the topic....

Lyrics from the "Smelly Cat Medley"
sung by Pheobe Buffay on the TV Series "Friends"

Three, four...

Smelly Cat, Smelly Cat,
What are they feeding you?
Smelly Cat, Smelly Cat
It's not your fault

They won't take you to the vet
You're obviously not their favorite pet
Smelly Cat, Smelly Cat,
It's not your fault

You may not be a bed of roses
You're not friend to those with noses
I'll miss you before we're done
Or the world will smell as one

Smelly Cat, Smelly Cat,
What are they feeding you?
Smelly Cat, Smelly Cat
It's not your fault

(Phoebe) Oh are we done?

One, two, what's that smell?

Smelly Cat, Smelly Cat,
What are they feeding you?
Smelly Cat, Smelly Cat
You're getting fat

I think that I'm gonna be sick
It's your ears, and nose and pick
Part of it, tempt me

One, two, what's that smell?

All the dogs in the neighborhood
Are saying this for your own good
What, you're fat, so you can't run
No fun, I bet, No fun

Smelly Cat, Smelly Cat,
Porno makes you eat like that
I saw you in the shopping mall

Smelly Cat, Smelly Cat,
It's not your fault,
Smelly Cat, Smelly Cat,
It's not your fault
Smelly Cat, Smelly Cat,
It's not your fault

We know what was in your food
They say it might affect your mood

You smell like something dead (3x)

One, two, what's that smell?

(Phoebe)Yeah, that's not the song

*Note: I'm only posting this to be funny; not implying you don't love or properly care for your cat!

All the colors and unnecessary ingredients could be causing the gas. Plain brown food with real meat (not meal or bi-products) as the #1 ingredient are going to be your best bet. The dyes, shapes and "flavors" are just for our enjoyment, the cats don't care what it looks like.
