Hi guys,

So this is my first attempt hatching emus, I have a few eggs and today I noticed a smell in the incubator that I fear may be the start of bad eggs. Having checked them, 2 are showing definite "clinky" sounds but are only on day 16 though there was a week or so pre-incubation. Should i immediately remove the eggs or wait for further signs to fully confirm? I dont think in my reading people have had a smell quite so early so I'm hoping one of the eggs has a chick with bad gas or something but that's hopeful beyond sanity I fear.

Any tips would be greatly received, I will ask someone later to see if the smell is similar to that of a typical bad egg or not should the smell be similar.

Thanks

I wouldn't count on it being bad gas from an embryo.
Remove all leakers and stinkers when you find them.

That's what I thought. I believe one may only smell from being next to the stinker in question as it doesn't seem like the smell is being emitted, more "worn". I believe the stinker is also the largest egg I had which is a shame. Thanks for your feedback.

Upon sourcing and determining the egg and the smell emanating from it being likened to pond algae we've pulled the plug. Down to 4 already after 17 days :(

You mean like you sounded them with a metal rod and they sound almost like fine china when you strike them with the rod? That is a sign of a bad egg when it happens so early in incubation.

Definitely separate them out, find the stinky ones, and pull them, good eggs won't smell. Hopefully you don't have to pull any more :fl

Yeah, I've pulled it - I did the above and can affirm what you've said to be correct. I feel so helpless it's horrible! Thanks for the help!
